ChatGPT’s visual changes are arriving in separate features, not as one wholesale redesign. The latest launch matching the “new interface” description is OpenAI’s October 5, 2026 announcement of a visual ad format, which the company said it would initially test during image generation for Free and Go users. Other recent changes focus on product discovery and image creation.
What changed in ChatGPT’s visual interface?
The updates serve three different tasks: finding products visually, creating and editing images, and showing visual ads. Their dates and rollout descriptions differ, so an announcement should not be taken as proof that every feature is available to every user now.

These are distinct launches, rather than components of a single interface release. OpenAI’s March 24 product announcement described its shopping experience this way: “You can now browse products visually, compare options side-by-side, and get detailed, up-to-date information—all in one place.”

The March 2026 shopping update is aimed at helping people explore and compare products within a conversation. OpenAI described visual browsing, side-by-side comparisons, inspiration, and conversational refinement. That lets a user narrow choices through follow-up requests rather than treating the experience as a static product grid.

OpenAI said rollout to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users would begin during the week of its March 24 announcement. The announcement does not establish merchant coverage, how products are ranked, or whether checkout is available for a particular item. Availability can also vary as rollout proceeds.

Find image tools in a dedicated place
OpenAI announced a dedicated Images home in December 2025. It is accessible from the sidebar on mobile and on chatgpt.com, and includes preset filters and prompts to help users start. OpenAI said the feature was rolling out to most users, with Business and Enterprise access to follow; that wording does not guarantee access for every account today.

Create and refine images with newer tools
On September 8, 2026, OpenAI announced ChatGPT Images 2.5, describing sketching, templates, image comments, and prompt sharing. These tools add ways to guide or revise image work, rather than simply entering a text prompt and starting over.

What the new visual ad format means
OpenAI’s October 5, 2026 announcement concerns advertising, not a redesign of every ChatGPT screen. The company said it would initially test a visual ad format during image generation for Free and Go users. OpenAI described the format as one that “helps people imagine how products and services could fit into their lives.” This is the company’s description of the format, not an independently verified assessment of its effect.
The announcement identifies an initial test, not a permanent or universal change to image generation. It does not establish that every Free or Go user will see an ad, or specify the full rules governing where ads appear.

Other visual shopping features in the release notes
OpenAI’s October 1, 2026 release notes mention virtual try-on for clothing and accessories, along with saving products to Favorites or folders in the ChatGPT Library. These are dated release-note items; the note’s mention alone does not show that they are available to every user, plan, or region.

OpenAI’s announcements describe an increasingly visual set of capabilities, but they do not establish identical access across plans, accounts, or regions. Check the feature in your own ChatGPT interface rather than assuming an announced rollout means it is already enabled for you.
