Apple has not announced that it is removing ChatGPT from Siri. The change is that Apple says the next generation of Apple Foundation Models behind its newer Siri AI was developed with Google and its Gemini models. ChatGPT remains documented as an optional extension for supported Apple Intelligence features, including Siri. The distinction is between the models powering Apple’s assistant and a separate service Siri can call for some requests.
What changed—and what did not
Apple’s September 14, 2026 update describes its next generation of Apple Foundation Models as custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models. Apple says those models run on-device and on servers using Private Cloud Compute. That is Apple’s current stated foundation-model direction for the newer Siri AI.

ChatGPT has a different role: it is an optional extension within Apple Intelligence. Apple’s iPhone guide and OpenAI’s help documentation continue to describe how to connect, control, or disable that extension. The official product information therefore does not support the claim that Apple ended ChatGPT in Siri. Nor does it establish exclusivity, contract terms, private negotiations, or whether the companies changed any commercial agreement.
How the relationship developed
| Date | What Apple or OpenAI said | What it means for users |
|---|---|---|
| June 10, 2024 | OpenAI announced that ChatGPT would be integrated into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Siri could suggest ChatGPT for selected requests, and ChatGPT was also planned for Writing Tools and image generation. OpenAI said the integration would use GPT-4o and could be used without an account; subscribers could connect an account for paid features. | ChatGPT was presented as a service users could call for certain tasks, not as a replacement for Siri. |
| March 31, 2025 | Apple described the integration as available: Siri could suggest ChatGPT for certain requests and return its response, and users could access it in Writing Tools. Apple said the integration was optional. For use without an account, Apple said OpenAI would not store requests or use them to train its models, and that IP addresses would be obscured. | The ChatGPT extension became a documented, optional part of Apple Intelligence experiences. |
| June 8, 2026 | Apple introduced Siri AI, describing an assistant with personal-context understanding, broad world knowledge, onscreen awareness, and the ability to take actions across apps. Apple said developer testing was beginning and a user beta would follow later in 2026. | Apple announced a broader assistant experience, with beta timing and availability still relevant to users. |
| September 14, 2026 | Apple announced that the Siri AI beta rollout was beginning in English. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish were planned for the following month. Apple attributed its next-generation Apple Foundation Models to collaboration with Google and Gemini. | Apple’s newer assistant model story now includes Google and Gemini, while ChatGPT remains separately documented as an optional extension. |
How Siri AI and the ChatGPT extension differ
| Question | Siri AI | ChatGPT extension |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Apple’s integrated assistant experience, described as using Apple’s next-generation Foundation Models developed with Google and Gemini. | An optional service extension that Apple Intelligence features, including Siri, can call for selected tasks. |
| Who provides the model or service? | Apple says its next-generation models were built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models. Apple says processing uses on-device models and Private Cloud Compute servers. | OpenAI provides ChatGPT. OpenAI’s 2024 announcement identified GPT-4o for the integration at that time; that announcement should not be read as confirmation of the model currently used for every request. |
| What can it do? | Apple described personal-context understanding, broad world knowledge, onscreen awareness, and actions across apps. The announcement is not a guarantee that every capability is available on every device or in every region. | Siri can offer ChatGPT for certain requests; ChatGPT is also documented for Writing Tools. It is not described as the model behind every Siri response. |
| Can the user control it? | It is part of Apple’s assistant experience; the exact controls and behavior may depend on the software version and beta state. | Users can set up or disable the extension. Confirmation settings and prompts for sending files are version-dependent. |
| Where is it available? | Apple’s announcements describe device, language, and regional limits; rollout and compatibility can change. | Apple says it is available only where ChatGPT service is available. Device and language eligibility also apply through Apple Intelligence. |
How to enable or manage ChatGPT on iPhone
OpenAI’s help instructions describe this path: Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. Menu names and options can vary by iOS version.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Open Settings, then select Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Select ChatGPT and follow the setup prompts.
- Choose whether to continue without an account or sign in. OpenAI says signing in is needed for chats to be saved to ChatGPT history.
- Review the confirmation controls shown on your device. OpenAI’s current help instructions describe an option to turn off “Confirm ChatGPT Requests” so Siri can send questions without asking. Apple’s iPhone guide for Siri AI beta describes a different flow in which users must first ask ChatGPT before a prompt, photo, or file is sent. Siri still asks permission before sending files under the OpenAI-described setting. Follow the controls and notices displayed by your installed software.
To stop using the extension, return to the ChatGPT setting under Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn it off. Apple’s guide documents controls for enabling, disabling, and managing the extension.
Privacy depends on account and settings
Apple’s March 31, 2025 statement about requests not being stored or used for model training applies to use of the integration without a ChatGPT account; Apple also said IP addresses would be obscured. OpenAI says signing in is required to save chats to ChatGPT history. Those statements describe different account conditions, so check the on-device disclosure and the account state before sending sensitive material.

Confirmation is also part of the practical distinction. Depending on software version and settings, Siri may ask before sending a question to ChatGPT, and the described flows treat files separately. Do not assume that a setting documented for one release or beta applies unchanged to another.
Check device, language, and region eligibility
- Hardware: Apple Intelligence requires supported Apple hardware. Apple’s June 2026 Siri AI announcement named iPhone 16 models or later and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, along with other Apple devices. Consult Apple’s current compatibility list for a specific model rather than assuming every iPhone supports the feature.
- Language and rollout: Apple said the September 2026 Siri AI beta rollout was beginning in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish planned for the following month. A planned language rollout does not establish that it is available on every device or in every region.
- Region: Apple says the ChatGPT extension is available only where the ChatGPT app and service are available. Apple Intelligence availability also varies by language and region.
- Software state: Siri AI’s announced beta rollout and feature behavior can change. Check the current Apple release notes and support guidance for your software version.
What the announcements do—and do not—prove
The product information establishes two concurrent facts: Apple has named Google and Gemini in its next-generation Siri model development, and Apple and OpenAI support pages still explain ChatGPT as an optional Apple Intelligence extension. It does not establish that ChatGPT has been removed, that Gemini is the exclusive model for every Siri task, or that the Apple–OpenAI relationship has ended. The announcements also provide no basis for declaring one experience better: that would require current comparative testing across specific tasks, devices, languages, and software versions.
