What this comparison covers
This comparison concerns the consumer-facing image tools described by OpenAI and Google, not their developer APIs. OpenAI’s current feature is called ChatGPT Images; its September 8, 2026 announcement names the current release Images 2.5. Google’s February 26, 2026 announcement identifies Nano Banana 2 as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, an image-generation and editing model used across Google products, including the Gemini app.

Availability and controls can vary by product, account, subscription, and rollout. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all ChatGPT tiers on web, iOS, and Android. Its “Images with thinking” feature is available on Plus, Pro, and Business, and was described as coming to Enterprise and Edu. Google also describes Nano Banana Pro as a separate option for eligible Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Check the current app and plan details before relying on a particular feature being available to you.

Can ChatGPT or Gemini edit a photo?
ChatGPT Images: text and selection-based edits
ChatGPT can edit an uploaded image or one it has generated. You can describe a change in text and, in the editor, select an area to target. OpenAI’s editing guide warns that the highlighted selection is not always precise and an edit may affect areas outside it. After a local change, check nearby edges, background details, and any subject that should have remained untouched.

Nano Banana 2: iterative edits and image combinations
Google describes Nano Banana 2 as supporting edits to uploaded and generated images, multi-turn refinement, photo blending, and subject consistency. Those are capabilities advertised by Google, not independent proof that every edit will preserve all details. Review the result at full size, especially where images were blended or the same subject was changed over several turns.
Which is better for readable text or translation in an image?
Google explicitly promotes text rendering and translation or localization within images for Nano Banana 2. OpenAI lists text creation as part of ChatGPT Images, and its documentation describes image text rendering as a feature; the Images 2.5 announcement also highlights sharper details and editing. That difference makes Gemini’s stated text-and-translation workflow especially relevant if a graphic needs localized lettering, but it does not establish that the result will be accurate for your exact copy.

For a poster, label, or other graphic where wording must be exact, provide the final text and inspect every character. Test the intended language, font scale, and layout; correct spelling in a generated image should not be assumed.
Which is better for generating current or specific real-world imagery?
Google says Nano Banana 2 uses Gemini’s world knowledge and real-time information and images from web search to depict specific subjects. OpenAI’s announcement describes live web-search data in the Images 2.0 thinking mode. Keep that distinction in mind: the OpenAI statement is about a named mode and version, not a general guarantee about all Images 2.5 generations.

When accuracy matters, give both tools the same named subject and date or other relevant context. Then check visible details against a reliable source. Web grounding may help inform a depiction, but it is not a substitute for verifying what the final image shows.
Can you upload an image and ask what is in it?
ChatGPT supports image inputs for questions about photos, documents, diagrams, screenshots, and charts. OpenAI’s image-input guidance identifies specific weak spots: exact object counts, small or rotated text, non-Latin text, some graph distinctions, precise spatial localization, panoramic or fisheye images, specialized medical images, and metadata. It also says images may be resized and that original filenames and metadata are not processed.

For visual analysis, verify small labels, counts, chart values, and claims about exactly where an object appears. Do not use image interpretation as a precision measurement tool or a substitute for medical interpretation. The Google feature announcements considered here do not provide a comparable image-understanding accuracy result, so they cannot support a fair accuracy verdict between the two services.
How to compare them fairly for your own work
There is no independent, controlled head-to-head result in the cited announcements. A useful personal comparison keeps the inputs and conditions consistent rather than relying on a tool’s description of its own output.

- Try tasks that match your needs: a text-heavy graphic, a localized photo edit, a multi-turn edit where a person or pet must stay recognizable, or a question about small text or a chart.
- For iterative work, give each tool the same follow-up edit request and inspect the entire result, including areas outside the intended change.
- Record the app, model or mode, account tier, date, and region, since features and access can vary.
- Judge the visible output yourself. For factual depictions or consequential image analysis, verify details independently.
What the speed and usage figures do—and do not—show
OpenAI said in its September 8, 2026 announcement that Images 2.5 reduces generation latency by up to 50% compared with Images 2.0. That is OpenAI’s own comparison with its earlier version; it is not a speed test against Nano Banana 2. Google’s February 2026 announcement provides no directly comparable latency figure in the reviewed text.
Google reported on October 13, 2025 that more than 5 billion images had been generated with Nano Banana to date. That is a usage total, not a quality, accuracy, or speed benchmark, and it cannot be compared directly with differently scoped image-volume figures.
