Internal M.2 SSDs must match each handheld’s size and interface, and game data may need setup on the new device. For removable storage, a microSD card is the easier option when both handhelds have compatible readers—but a card that physically fits is not guaranteed to launch every game on every system. An external USB-C SSD is a third option, with its own connection and library setup requirements.
First, identify which kind of storage you mean
“Expansion SSD” can refer to three different things: an internal M.2 drive installed inside the handheld, a removable microSD card used for games, or an external SSD connected over USB-C. They have different compatibility rules, so a drive that works in one category should not be assumed to work in another.

- Internal M.2 SSD: requires a matching physical size and interface, and fitting it involves opening the device.
- microSD card: can be moved between compatible card readers, but formatting and game-library recognition depend on the receiving device and software.
- External USB-C SSD: avoids opening the handheld, but must be connected externally and supported by the device, operating system, and launcher.
Can an internal M.2 SSD move between handhelds?
Only if the exact models support the same M.2 form factor and interface—and even then, physical fit does not guarantee the installed operating system or game library will work without further setup. Check each device’s official specifications and maintenance instructions before buying or removing a drive.

Lenovo’s guide for the Legion Go (8.8-inch, Gen 2) specifies one PCIe Gen4 M.2 slot supporting 2242 or 2280 SSDs. Those dimensions and that interface are specific to this model; they do not establish compatibility with a Steam Deck, ROG Ally, or another handheld. See Lenovo’s Legion Go 2 user guide.

- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
Unlike a removable card, an internal SSD swap is not a casual way to share a game library. Opening hardware and moving a drive may also mean recovering or reinstalling an operating system. The cited device documentation does not establish a universal swap-and-play procedure across handhelds.
Is microSD the better shared storage option?
Among the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go 2 examples, microSD is the most straightforward removable storage to move because each documents a card reader. This confirms that the devices accept compatible cards; it does not guarantee that a populated card will work seamlessly across their different operating systems or game launchers.

| Device | Documented storage support | What that means for sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck | Valve supports UHS-I Class 3 or better microSD cards and documents formatting a card for use. | A card may need formatting through Steam Deck settings. Back up its contents first, because formatting can erase data. Valve’s guide does not support faster UHS-II or UHS-III rates on Deck. |
| ROG Ally | ASUS documents a microSD reader that supports UHS-II cards or backward-compatible cards, and says games may be installed to the card. | This confirms card-based game storage on the Ally; ASUS does not promise that a populated card transfers seamlessly to another operating system. |
| Lenovo Legion Go 2 | Lenovo lists support for microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards. | A compatible card can be used in its reader, but the guide does not guarantee cross-device game-library portability. |
Valve’s wording for Steam Deck is specific: “Any UHS-I (class 3 or better) microSD card is supported.” See the Steam Deck basic use and troubleshooting guide. ASUS likewise confirms that “Users can upgrade their storage capacity via micro SD card, and install games to that storage device” in its ROG Ally FAQ. Lenovo lists the card families in its Legion Go 2 guide.

Formatting and game-library setup are separate from card fit
Steam Deck requires formatting a card before use through its storage settings. If the card already contains files, copy them somewhere safe first. A device recognizing a card does not necessarily mean its operating system will read the card’s existing format, or that a launcher will recognize games already stored on it. When switching platforms, check the receiving device’s storage settings and the game launcher’s library options rather than assuming that installation data is ready to run.

The documented Steam Deck-to-Steam Machine exception
Valve gives a specific reuse example: a microSD card previously used for Steam Deck Library storage “should be able to use that card with your Steam Machine and play the installed games without performing any additional steps.” That statement applies to the Steam Deck and Steam Machine case; it is not a general promise for Windows handhelds, other launchers, or every SteamOS device. See Valve’s Steam Machine feature and troubleshooting guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about an external USB-C SSD?
An external SSD connects as a peripheral rather than fitting into the handheld. It can be a practical removable drive when the device and software support the intended use, but the drive, enclosure, cable, port, and game launcher all matter. Consider whether the cable and enclosure are manageable during handheld play; this setup is often more convenient when the device is docked or used at a desk.

Lenovo’s Legion Go 2 guide lists USB-C ports and cautions that actual transfer rates vary with the host, peripheral, files, configuration, and environment. That is a model-specific interface note, not a speed guarantee for other handhelds or external drives. Consult the target device’s documentation and the launcher’s instructions before moving an installed library.

Check these four things before moving storage
- Physical fit and interface: For an internal SSD, verify the exact M.2 size and interface in the documentation for both handhelds. For removable storage, verify the card type and reader support.
- Card or drive format: Find out whether the receiving operating system can read the existing format. Back up the files before any prompt to format or initialize the storage.
- Launcher recognition: Confirm that the game platform can add or recognize the library location, and check whether games need verification, repair, or reinstallation.
- Practicality: Weigh the convenience of a removable microSD card against the slower or more limited card support documented for a particular device, and weigh an external SSD’s connection and cable against an internal drive’s installation effort.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose microSD for straightforward removable storage when both devices support the card and you are prepared to check formatting and library setup.
- Choose an external USB-C SSD if you want storage without opening the handheld and are comfortable connecting a separate drive.
- Move an internal M.2 SSD only after checking both models’ official specifications and accounting for possible operating-system recovery or game-library setup.
