Yes—ChatGPT is free to use. As of October 7, 2026, OpenAI’s Free plan includes everyday text chats, web search, data analysis, file and image uploads, image creation, and access to existing GPTs, but several tools have separate limits. The default model and availability can change, so check OpenAI’s current Free Tier FAQ for the latest details.

What does ChatGPT Free include?

OpenAI’s current Free Tier FAQ lists access to GPT-5.6 Luna, web search for up-to-date information, data analysis, file and image uploads, image creation, and the ability to discover and use GPTs. Free users also have 500 MB of Library storage. Think is available in the mobile app and is rolling out on the web; availability may differ by platform during that rollout. Model names and features can change over time.

How many messages can you send on the Free plan?

OpenAI says Free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. That does not mean every model or tool is unlimited: GPT access, file uploads, image generation, Voice, data analysis, and other tools have their own usage limits. The Free Tier FAQ does not publish a fixed general message or tool quota. Limits vary by plan and model, may change, and can be shown in ChatGPT when they apply.

Can Free users use GPTs, and can they create one?

Free users can discover and use existing GPTs, subject to the current Free-tier model limit. They cannot create or publish new GPTs on a personal account. OpenAI says new GPT creation and publishing are unavailable on personal accounts across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. In Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces, creation may be available when workspace settings and permissions allow it. Editing an existing GPT also depends on plan and permissions. See OpenAI’s GPT creation and editing guidance.

What happens when you hit a Free limit?

The effect depends on which limit you reach. If you reach the current Free-tier model limit, GPT access pauses until the displayed reset time. If you reach a separate limit for a tool—such as uploads, image generation, Voice, or data analysis—you must wait before using that tool again. A tool limit does not necessarily mean everyday text chat has stopped.

OpenAI says upgrading a Free account to Plus, Pro, or Business resets usage rates. That reset is distinct from waiting for a Free-tier limit to refresh; it does not establish a permanent unlimited allowance on a paid plan. The applicable plan and model limits still matter.

Is ChatGPT Voice free?

Voice is available on the web, iOS, and Android. OpenAI describes the Free allowance as “Limited access to GPT-Live-1 mini. Limits may change.” Voice has a separate usage bucket: live usage in Chat mode is measured over a rolling 24-hour period, and ChatGPT notifies you when you reach a limit. Your browser or mobile app may also ask for microphone permission. See the ChatGPT Voice FAQ for current details.

What should Free users know about privacy and data?

Temporary Chat and account controls

Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not use or create memories, and are not used to train models. To export data, go to Settings → Data Controls → Export. You can delete an account in Settings or through OpenAI’s Privacy Portal. See the Data Controls FAQ.

Voice audio and transcripts

OpenAI says audio clips from Live and Advanced Voice conversations are stored with the transcript and retained for 30 days. The clips are not used to train models unless you choose to share audio or video, or enable the relevant account settings. Whether transcripts are used depends on your plan and settings. Details are in OpenAI’s Audio Clips FAQ.
