No: Apple’s documented ChatGPT integration does not give ChatGPT control of your iMessage inbox. You can invoke ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence Writing Tools while composing text, choose what text to include, review the result, and revert to your original. Apple and OpenAI describe a writing assistant—not background access to your message history or autonomous texting.
What ChatGPT can do while you write a message
Apple says Writing Tools can use ChatGPT to create text or images from a description. In a text field, you start the task, choose Compose, describe what you want, and decide whether to include selected text or all of it. You can then review and revise the result, accept suggestions, or return to the unedited text. Apple describes this as an optional composition workflow, not automatic access to messages. OpenAI likewise describes Apple integrations as a way to get help writing messages, among other uses such as asking questions or analyzing an image or document. Reading your inbox
The official instructions reviewed do not describe ChatGPT reading your full iMessage history or monitoring conversations in the background. The documented Writing Tools flow begins when you invoke it and choose the content to use. Do not treat help drafting a message as permission for inbox-wide access.

Sending a message
The Writing Tools instructions describe creating, reviewing, and adopting text; they do not document ChatGPT independently sending an iMessage. You remain responsible for deciding what to use and for sending the message through Messages.
Seeing text you are composing
When you choose to use Writing Tools and include selected or all text, that chosen content is part of the request. The integration is not described as continuously observing everything you type. The practical distinction is whether you invoke the feature and submit content, not whether ChatGPT is silently watching the conversation.

What information is sent, and how account choice matters
Apple says you choose what content to send through the ChatGPT extension. A request and any attachments are sent, along with limited context such as time zone, country, device type, language, and the feature being used. Apple says it obscures your IP address from ChatGPT, while providing general location for fraud prevention and legal compliance. It says it does not receive your IP address, store requests, or use them to train models.
- With a connected ChatGPT account: Your account settings and OpenAI policies apply. Interactions may be saved to chat history and may be used to improve services depending on your settings and choices.
So “nothing is ever stored” is too broad: the account setting and choices matter. If you do not want to submit message content to ChatGPT, do not invoke the extension for that text.

How to set up or turn off the ChatGPT extension
- On iPhone, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT.
- Tap Set Up to enable the extension. You can continue without an account or connect an existing ChatGPT account.
- To disable it later, return to the ChatGPT setting and turn the extension off.
Apple and OpenAI document this setup path in the Apple Intelligence integration instructions. Turning the extension off prevents its use through Apple Intelligence; it does not change messages already sent to ChatGPT or replace your ChatGPT account’s data controls.
Siri’s ChatGPT setting is separate from Writing Tools
Siri can also send some requests to ChatGPT. Its confirmation setting controls whether Siri asks before sending those requests, and Apple says Siri always asks before sending photos or files. That setting is not a switch allowing ChatGPT to send iMessages, and it should not be confused with the Writing Tools workflow for composing text. Check iPhone, software, language, and region support
Availability depends on more than having the ChatGPT extension switched on. Apple’s current iOS 27-or-later guide lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later among Apple Intelligence-enabled devices. Apple also cautions that Apple Intelligence is not available in every language or region, and the ChatGPT extension is limited to places where the ChatGPT app and service are available. Requirements can change by software version and market, so check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence availability guide for your location before troubleshooting or planning an upgrade.
