Chat Works. Does the Agent Actually Retrieve Memory?

An agent can show memory in context while active retrieval fails. Learn why passive injection and tool calls diverge, and how to verify the gateway from the actual executor.

Not necessarily. A working chat and memory text visible in context do not prove that the agent successfully called a memory-retrieval tool. In a Docker deployment described by DEV Community contributor liuyuyan6100, passive memory injection continued while active retrieval requests timed out. The author traced the problem to a gateway URL reachable inside the container network but not from the environment executing the tool. The proposed correction had not yet been verified, so it should be treated as a diagnosis to test—not a confirmed fix.

Why a working chat does not prove retrieval worked

A successful chat request confirms that the client can reach the gateway along the path used for chat. It does not establish that a separate environment—the tool executor—can reach a URL included in the agent’s tool instructions. The model can select an appropriate tool and the executor can still fail before the request reaches the service.

In the reported deployment, the assistant could answer and memory-related content could appear in its context even as active retrieval requests timed out. The author’s key distinction is that “A plausible answer is insufficient evidence that the retrieval path succeeded.” — liuyuyan6100, DEV Community

Passive injection and active retrieval are different paths

Passive context injection

Server-side injection can add material to the conversation context without a client tool call. The case report describes injected content that may include L3 core memory, L2 scenario indexes, persona information, and a skill list. Seeing such material—or seeing the assistant use it—is not by itself proof that an active retrieval endpoint responded.

Active memory and skill bridge calls

Tool instructions can expose bridge endpoints such as ${base}/memory-bridge/v3 and ${base}/skill-bridge/v3/skill. The client-side tool executor must be able to connect to the base URL to use them. If that URL resolves or routes only within the deployment’s container network, server-side injection may still work while a request from the executor fails.

How the reported gateway URL could become unreachable

In the author’s account, an explicit injection.externalGatewayUrl takes precedence. If it is absent and the configured host is 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1, the inspected implementation on the feat/server_team branch selects a non-internal IPv4 address, constructs an HTTP base URL, and emits a warning. In the reported Docker setup, the selected address worked within the container network but was not reachable from the external tool executor.

How to diagnose the failure without mistaking a probe for proof

Run checks from the exact runtime that sends the tool request, not just from a browser, host shell, or another container. Interpret the result narrowly:

  • HTTP 401: An HTTP service responded and requires authentication. This shows that a service answered at that address; it does not show that authentication succeeded or that a memory operation worked.
  • HTTP 000: No HTTP response was received. It does not distinguish a timeout from DNS resolution or routing failure.

Even a successful connection proves only transport reachability. To establish retrieval, check the tool’s application-level result and verify that the returned content came from the expected source.

Correct the gateway address and proxy route at their source

The author proposes setting injection.externalGatewayUrl to an entry point that the tool executor can reach, then ensuring the reverse proxy forwards the bridge paths. The domain shown in the case report is an example, not a recommended or usable endpoint. Make the setting persistent in the source configuration rather than editing a generated startup file, which may be replaced on restart.

After changing the setting, start a fresh conversation and inspect the newly injected tool URLs. Test those addresses from the actual executor. A chat request from a different network path is not a substitute for that check.

Check registered knowledge resources separately

Wiki or code-graph tools may use URLs saved when each resource was registered. Those addresses are independent of the gateway base URL, so changing externalGatewayUrl does not automatically repair them. Test DNS resolution and connectivity for every registered resource from the runtime that uses it, then confirm a retrieved item’s source. For example, host.docker.internal may not resolve in a Linux environment unless that hostname is configured there; do not assume a Docker Desktop hostname is portable.

Verification checklist

The following are proposed checks from the case report, not completed post-fix tests:

  1. From the actual tool execution environment, probe the injected gateway address and confirm it reaches the intended gateway.
  2. Update the persistent configuration, start a fresh conversation, and inspect the newly injected tool URLs.
  3. Make an authorized memory-tool request. Verify application-level success and confirm the returned content is from the expected memory source; do not infer success from a later answer that could have come from local search.
  4. For each registered knowledge resource, check name resolution and connection separately, retrieve an expected item, and confirm its source.

The author had not reported completing these checks, confirming the proposed correction, or measuring any change in answer quality.
