To change the screen-lock passcode on a Samsung Galaxy S21, open Settings > Lock screen > Screen lock type (some software versions show Lock screen and AOD instead), enter your current PIN, pattern, or password, then choose and confirm the new lock. You must know the current screen lock to change it this way.
Change the screen lock from Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Lock screen. On some software versions, the menu is called Lock screen and AOD.
- Tap Screen lock type.
- Enter your current PIN, pattern, or password when prompted.
- Select the new screen-lock type you want.
- Follow the prompts to enter the new credential and confirm it.
Menu names and placement can vary by device and Android version. Follow the labels displayed on your phone rather than assuming every Galaxy S21 has an identical menu. Samsung’s screen-lock guidance describes the current path as Lock screen and AOD > Screen lock type, while other versions may show Lock screen > Screen lock type.

Choose the lock type that fits your needs
| Option | How it works | Practical difference |
|---|---|---|
| PIN | A numeric code | A credential-based option that is usually quick to enter. |
| Password | An alphanumeric credential | Lets you use letters and numbers, but takes longer to enter. |
| Pattern | A drawn pattern | Unlock by tracing a pattern on the screen. |
| Fingerprint or face unlock | Biometric recognition | These are additional unlock features, configured separately from the basic screen-lock type. |
| Swipe or none | Swipe to dismiss the lock screen, or remove the screen-lock credential | These options do not provide the same credential-based lock barrier and may not be available on every configuration. |
Available choices depend on the Galaxy model and software version. Samsung documents PIN, password, and pattern as screen-lock types and treats face and fingerprint recognition separately. Samsung’s lock-screen and biometric guidance explains the distinction.

The Settings procedure requires the existing screen lock; it is not a way to bypass a forgotten PIN, password, or pattern. Samsung says that supported Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later may allow you to reset a newly forgotten lock using the previous PIN, password, or pattern within 72 hours of changing it. This recovery option depends on device and software support, so it is not guaranteed on every Galaxy S21. Samsung’s forgotten-lock guidance describes the eligibility and recovery process.

If that option is unavailable and you cannot unlock the phone, Samsung advises that repair or a web-initiated reset may be required. A reset can affect data, so review Samsung’s instructions for your situation before proceeding. Samsung Japan’s support page outlines the available next steps.

Screen lock type is where you select a new PIN, password, or pattern. Secure lock settings are separate options, such as when the phone locks automatically; Samsung says they appear after a screen lock has been set. A SIM PIN protects access to the SIM, and a Samsung account password signs in to your Samsung account—neither is changed through the screen-lock procedure above. Samsung’s support instructions cover screen-lock and secure-lock settings.
