If your device offers them, adjust bubble opacity or text contrast. Samsung identifies these as device-dependent options, not universal settings. Samsung’s customization guidance documents background choices but does not promise a control for selecting any bubble hue.
What the color setting changes
The documented Samsung Messages color selection changes the thread background. Some devices may provide opacity or contrast adjustments, but the available controls vary. Do not assume that changing the background also changes the message bubble color or changes what the other person sees.

If the customization controls are missing
First check that you are using Samsung Messages, not Google Messages or another messaging app, and check the phone’s Android version. Samsung’s U.S. instructions apply to devices running Android 11 or older; Samsung says the app is unavailable for download on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer. The company says Samsung Messages was discontinued on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer starting July 6, 2026. Samsung’s U.S. availability guidance does not establish the same status for every country; the Associated Press reported that Samsung clarified the discontinuation guidance was limited to the U.S. market (AP report, April 6, 2026). If you are outside the U.S., check Samsung support for your region.

If Samsung Messages does not offer the controls you need, Google Messages has a conversation theme setting. Open the conversation, tap the recipient or group name at the top—or tap More—then choose Chat theme. Select a palette color and, if desired, a wallpaper, then tap Apply. Google says the theme is visible only to the person who sets it, so it does not recolor the conversation on the other participant’s device. See Google’s conversation customization steps.
