To change who can view or edit a OneNote notebook stored in OneDrive, open the notebook’s Share menu and choose Manage Access. There, adjust a person’s permission under People or a sharing link’s permission under Links. These are separate access routes, so check both if you want to end all sharing.
Change permissions from OneDrive
- In OneDrive, find the notebook in your folders and open its context menu.
- Select Share.
- In the sharing window, select Manage Access.
- Under People, select the person whose access you want to change. Under Links, select the gear icon beside the relevant link to adjust its settings.
- Choose Can View to let someone open the notebook without editing, or Can Edit to allow changes. To end an individual’s direct access, select Remove User.
Microsoft lists this procedure as applying to OneNote for Microsoft 365, OneNote 2024, OneNote 2021, and OneNote 2016. The exact interface may vary by version or account; if labels differ, look for the notebook’s current access settings in Manage Access. Microsoft Support’s notebook permissions instructions describe these controls.

Direct access and sharing links are different
A person listed under People has direct access. A link listed under Links is a separate way to reach the notebook. Changing or removing one entry does not necessarily change the other.

| Sharing link | Select the gear beside the link under Links and choose the permission level. | Use the trash icon to remove the link. |
Disable a sharing link
- Open the notebook’s Share menu, then select Manage Access.
- In Links, find the link you want to disable and select its gear icon if you need to confirm which link it is.
- Remove the link using the trash icon.
Removing a link disables that route: people who use it can no longer view or edit the notebook through that link. If the panel offers Create and share a new link but shows no existing link, Microsoft says there is no link there or it has already been disabled.

Stop sharing the notebook altogether
To stop all sharing, review both sections in Manage Access. Remove each person who has direct access under People, then delete every active sharing link under Links. Microsoft’s stop-sharing guidance likewise distinguishes direct access from links.

Microsoft’s OneNote for the web guidance describes changing or stopping a person’s notebook permissions through Share. It also says a single page cannot be shared separately from the notebook. Microsoft’s OneNote for the web instructions cover notebook sharing.

Microsoft’s cross-platform stop-sharing article says sharing cannot be managed in the Android app; use a desktop app or sign in at onenote.com instead. Its instructions include desktop, Mac, iOS, Android, and web guidance, but the available controls can depend on the platform. See Microsoft’s platform-specific stop-sharing instructions.
