When your Wi‑Fi password or network name changes, your Google Home Mini can’t keep connecting automatically. You’ll need to update its network settings through the Google Home app, then confirm the device joins the new Wi‑Fi.

The good news: the process is straightforward if the Mini can reach your phone and you’re using the right frequency band (usually 2.4 GHz). This guide covers both iPhone/iPad and Android, plus what to do when the setup screen won’t find the device.

What changes when you switch Wi‑Fi on a Google Home Mini

Your Google Home Mini stores Wi‑Fi credentials for the network it last used. When you change your router password or switch to a new SSID, the Mini will typically go offline until you reconfigure it with the new network details.

Importantly, you’re not entering the Wi‑Fi password into the Mini directly. Instead, the Google Home app coordinates the join process using your phone and your Google account.

Before you start: prerequisites and what you’ll need

  • Google Home app installed on your phone (latest version recommended).
  • Your new Wi‑Fi network name (SSID) and password.
  • Your phone on the same Wi‑Fi network you want the Mini to use (or follow the app’s prompts if it instructs a different flow).
  • Confirm your Mini is powered on and has steady lights during setup attempts.
  • Router compatibility: most setups work best on 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi.

If you recently replaced your router or changed Wi‑Fi settings after an outage, also make sure DHCP is working and your network isn’t blocking new devices by MAC filtering or advanced security rules.

How to change Google Home Mini Wi‑Fi network (Google Home app)

Use the Google Home app to remove the old Wi‑Fi configuration and set the Mini up again on the new network. The steps are nearly identical across iOS and Android, but the menu labels vary slightly.

iPhone and iPad (iOS)

  1. Open the Google Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. On the main screen, tap Settings (gear icon) for your Google Home Mini.
  3. Tap Device information or Settings (wording can vary), then look for Remove device or Remove from home.
  4. Remove the Mini from the home (this clears its old Wi‑Fi credentials).
  5. Go back to the app home screen and tap + (Add) in the top-left.
  6. Choose Set up device → New device.
  7. Select Home (the correct household) and continue until the app detects your Google Home Mini.
  8. When prompted, choose your new Wi‑Fi network (SSID) and enter the new password.
  9. Wait for confirmation that the Mini is connected. If you’re asked to pair Bluetooth or allow permissions, follow the on-screen prompts.

If the app shows your Mini as offline, removal + re-setup is often faster than trying to “change Wi‑Fi” in-place.

Android

  1. Open the Google Home app on your Android phone.
  2. Tap your Google Home Mini tile.
  3. Tap Settings (gear icon) for the device.
  4. Find and tap Remove device (or Remove from home), then confirm.
  5. Return to the Google Home home screen, then tap + (Add) → Set up device.
  6. Choose New devices, then select the correct Home.
  7. Follow the setup prompts until the app finds your Google Home Mini.
  8. Select the desired Wi‑Fi network and enter the new Wi‑Fi password.
  9. Wait for setup to finish and verify the device shows as online.

If the password changed but the network name stayed the same

This is the most common scenario: you kept the SSID (like MyWiFi) but changed the password on your router. In many cases, the Mini will still fail to reconnect because it stored the old password.

Best practice is to use the same remove + re-setup approach described above. Even if the network name is identical, the Mini needs updated credentials.

  • Don’t rely on the router to “push” passwords—most consumer routers don’t automatically update already-associated IoT credentials.
  • If your router offers guest networks, ensure your Mini is set to the main network (guest networks often block local device discovery).

When the main method fails: troubleshooting checklist

If setup can’t find the Mini, or it connects and then drops, work through these checks in order. They cover the majority of real-world failures.

1) Confirm the Mini can be discovered

  • Unplug the Google Home Mini, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
  • Make sure you’re using the same Google Home account and the Mini was originally added to that home.
  • Try setup closer to the router (good signal matters for first association).

2) Check 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi requirements

Google Home Mini devices typically connect to 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi. Many “smart Wi‑Fi” routers auto-band-steer between 2.4 and 5 GHz, and the setup flow can fail if your phone and Mini land on the wrong band.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If your router supports it, temporarily enable a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID (for example, MyWiFi_2G).
  • During setup, choose that 2.4 GHz network in the Google Home app.

3) Router security settings that commonly break IoT setup

Router feature What to check Why it matters
MAC filtering Confirm the Mini’s MAC address isn’t blocked New devices can be denied even with the correct password
WPA mode Try WPA2-PSK (AES) if you have an option Some IoT devices are picky about newer modes
Client isolation / AP isolation Disable temporarily for the SSID Prevents local communication needed for discovery/control
Guest Wi‑Fi Avoid guest SSIDs for initial setup Guest networks often block device-to-device traffic

4) Phone network and permissions

  • Disable VPN temporarily and try again.
  • Ensure Location services are enabled (some Android flows require it for Wi‑Fi discovery).
  • On iPhone, verify Google Home has permission to access local network (system prompts may appear).

5) The device shows connected, but it’s still not responding

If the Mini joins the network but won’t respond reliably, check your router for DNS or firewall rules. Also confirm the Mini and your phone aren’t on different SSIDs that block local traffic.

Factory reset and re-setup (last resort)

If the device won’t connect after several attempts, a factory reset clears the stored configuration so the app can start fresh.

Reset instructions can vary slightly by generation. Use the physical button method described for Google Home Mini:

  1. Locate the reset button on the Mini (often a pinhole).
  2. With the device powered on, press and hold the reset button.
  3. Keep holding until you hear a confirmation sound and/or see the lights change (commonly around 5–15 seconds).
  4. Release and wait for the Mini to reboot into setup mode.
  5. Open the Google Home app, tap + → Set up device, then add the Mini again on the new Wi‑Fi.

After reset, the Mini must be configured to your Google account/home again. If your app still shows the device with old status, remove it first, then re-add.

2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz and other router gotchas

Wi‑Fi band choice is the most frequent reason “it won’t connect.” Many routers default to 5 GHz for new devices, but the Mini may only successfully associate with 2.4 GHz.

  • Dual-band SSIDs: If your router uses one combined name (band steering), try forcing the Mini onto a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID.
  • Channel width: If you can set it, keep 2.4 GHz on a stable mode (20 MHz is usually safer than 40 MHz for compatibility).
  • Security: Use WPA2 if available. Avoid experimental WPA3-only configurations when troubleshooting.

Comparisons: updating Wi‑Fi vs replacing the device

Changing Wi‑Fi on a Google Home Mini is usually a software/configuration task, not a hardware problem. Replacing the device only becomes rational if the Mini’s Wi‑Fi radio is failing or the reset process won’t progress to setup mode.

Before you replace it, verify the Mini can be added at all (setup mode + discovery). If discovery never works across multiple phones and multiple networks, that’s when replacement—or service—starts to make sense.

FAQs

Why does my Google Home Mini keep saying it’s offline after I change the Wi‑Fi password?

Most often, the Mini still has the old password stored. Removing the device from the Google Home app and re-adding it with the new Wi‑Fi is the reliable fix.

Can I change the Wi‑Fi password without removing the device?

Sometimes the app offers a direct “update Wi‑Fi” style flow, but it’s inconsistent across versions. In practice, remove + re-setup clears the credentials cleanly.

What Wi‑Fi band should I use: 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?

For the best chance of success, use 2.4 GHz. If your router uses auto-steering, switch temporarily to a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID for setup.

My phone and router are on the same Wi‑Fi, but setup still can’t find the Mini. What should I do?

Power-cycle the Mini, disable VPN, and ensure the correct Google account/home is selected. Then retry while closer to the router.

Will a factory reset erase my music services or routines?

It clears the device configuration (Wi‑Fi and association). After re-setup, you may need to re-link services and verify any routines/voice settings tied to the device.

Bottom Line

To change your Google Home Mini Wi‑Fi password or network, remove the device from the Google Home app and set it up again on the new SSID using the Google Home app. It’s the fastest path and avoids stuck credential states.

If it still fails, focus on 2.4 GHz compatibility and router security settings, then use a factory reset if discovery or association won’t complete.
