Linux cgroup v2 lets administrators organize processes into a hierarchy and control how workloads share resources. The resctl-demo project makes the effects tangible: it runs guided contention scenarios so you can see how controls affect competing work, while its companion resctl-bench evaluates whole-system behavior. The tour by Tejun Heo for the Linux Foundation was recorded on June 9, 2021, so use it to understand the concepts—not as proof that its installation steps or requirements still match a current system.
What cgroup v2 controls—and what the demo teaches
Control groups, or cgroups, group processes so Linux can apply resource-specific behavior to them within a hierarchy. With cgroup v2, controllers expose interfaces for managing resources such as CPU time, memory, and I/O. The kernel’s cgroup v2 documentation is the authoritative reference for interface details and version-dependent behavior.

The practical problem is interference: maintenance work can affect a latency-sensitive service, or a build can make a desktop sluggish. The resctl-demo overview frames its examples mainly around server workloads, while noting that the strategies may also apply to desktop situations. Its scenarios teach resource-control ideas; they cannot guarantee how an arbitrary production workload will behave.

How resctl-demo and resctl-bench differ
resctl-demo: guided scenarios
resctl-demo is an interactive, guided demonstration built around self-contained workloads and live resource conflicts. Rather than presenting a single score, it helps show what happens as controls are applied to competing workloads. The project documentation describes its overview and scenarios.
resctl-bench: repeatable whole-system evaluation
The accompanying resctl-bench README describes a collection of whole-system benchmarks that reproduce contention with simulated workloads, analyze system and workload behavior, and produce reports. Its scope matters: end-to-end behavior involves kernel subsystems, userspace, filesystems, block I/O, and the storage device. Cgroup settings are one part of the picture, not a complete explanation of performance. The materials do not establish a universal hardware score or a measured percentage improvement.

Limits and protections solve different problems
A limit sets a ceiling or a boundary that constrains usage; a protection influences how a workload fares when memory is reclaimed. The memory-control guide for the demo explains four useful cgroup v2 controls. Their exact behavior can depend on kernel version and system conditions, so consult the kernel documentation for current details.
| Control | Role | Practical effect described by the guide |
|---|---|---|
memory.max |
Hard memory limit | If usage cannot be reduced under the limit, an out-of-memory (OOM) event can result in processes being killed. |
memory.high |
Throttling boundary | Excess use is throttled, giving userspace a chance to react. |
memory.min |
Memory protection | Protects a portion of memory from reclaim, subject to kernel behavior and system constraints. |
memory.low |
Work-conserving protection | Influences reclaim priority while allowing otherwise idle capacity to be used elsewhere; the protection can be ignored when necessary to avoid OOM. |
The demo’s memory guide emphasizes the work-conserving nature of memory.low: protection does not mean capacity must remain unused when the protected workload does not need it. These controls should not be treated as interchangeable—limits constrain or throttle, whereas protections influence reclaim.

CPU, memory, and I/O are distinct control dimensions
The project’s requirements guide calls for cgroup v2 with CPU, memory, and I/O controllers enabled. These are separate resource dimensions; controlling one does not by itself resolve contention in another. The guide also discusses capabilities such as freezer support, recursive memory protection, and I/O-cost control for particular demonstrations. Because that requirements page is historical, check its current project requirements alongside current kernel documentation rather than relying on old kernel-version thresholds.
Check compatibility before choosing a setup route
The project documents multiple ways to try the demo: a premade Amazon EC2 machine image, an installable USB system image for UEFI x86-64 hardware, and a source-based route. These options do not imply that each is still available or suitable for every current system. Start with the project’s repository instructions and its requirements guide to confirm current support.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
- EC2 image: The getting-started material documents a premade Amazon Machine Image for Amazon EC2. Check the project page for current availability and instructions.
- Local USB image: The documented installable image targets UEFI x86-64 hardware. This route requires a USB flash drive; the page does not specify a capacity or model. Review its getting-started documentation before preparing media.
- Build from source: The repository describes compiling and installing the software. Follow the current repository README, since build and system requirements may change.
The historical requirements list includes a specially patched kernel branch, cgroup v2, btrfs on a non-composite storage device, a btrfs swap file at least one third the size of physical memory, systemd, oomd, and additional utilities. Treat this as a record of the documented setup at the time, not a universal or current checklist. Confirm every requirement before changing storage, filesystems, boot parameters, or system configuration.
Run the memory stress scenario cautiously
The resource-protection demonstration intentionally creates severe memory contention. Its documentation warns that disabling safeguards and starting a memory hog can make the machine sluggish or stall; recovery depends on circumstances such as OOM handling. The resource-protection scenario guide advises stopping the experiment if the system becomes sluggish.

- Stop the experiment when the system becomes sluggish, as the project documentation advises.
What the 2021 tour can—and cannot—establish
The Linux Foundation recording is a useful conceptual tour, dated June 9, 2021. It illustrates why resource control matters and how guided scenarios can expose contention. It does not establish current image availability, current kernel requirements, a universal performance gain, or the outcome for a particular production workload. For present-day use, verify project setup details against the current repository and kernel behavior against the kernel documentation.
