Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds another check to a sign-in, making a stolen password less likely to be enough on its own—but it cannot prevent every account takeover.
What CERT-In recommends for personal accounts
In its advisory on preventing data breaches and data leaks, CERT-In tells individual users: “Use strong and unique passwords for all the online accounts.” It also says: “Enable two-factor authentication wherever available.” CERT-In’s 2021 advisory uses “two-factor authentication”; later materials commonly use “multi-factor authentication” (MFA). Both refer to requiring an additional authentication step beyond a password in the relevant sign-in flow.

In practice, turn on MFA separately for each account that offers it. Look in the service’s account security or sign-in settings, follow its enrollment instructions, and check what recovery options it provides. CERT-In’s individual-user advisory does not give a universal setup path for every provider, so use the service’s own instructions rather than assuming the menus are the same.
Make the password part of the protection
MFA complements, rather than replaces, a strong, unique password. Reusing one password across services means a breach at one service can put other accounts at risk. Use a different password for each account and update the service’s recovery information so you can regain access if you lose an authentication method.

What MFA does—and what it does not
An extra sign-in check can reduce the chance that someone who has only obtained your password can enter your account. It is not a guarantee: an attacker may target the additional authentication step or steal an already authenticated session.
CERT-In’s August 7, 2026 advisory on emerging threats targeting Microsoft 365 describes device-code phishing, in which a user is tricked into authorizing a code controlled by an attacker, and theft and replay of session tokens. These techniques can let an attacker obtain access despite MFA. Treat unexpected sign-in prompts and authorization requests cautiously; do not approve a request you did not initiate, and follow your service’s guidance for reporting suspicious activity.

Which authentication method should you use?
Choose among the methods your account provider supports, considering how well each works across your devices and accounts and how you will recover access if a device or credential is lost. CERT-In’s Microsoft 365 advisory highlights phishing-resistant authentication methods for organizations, including FIDO2, Windows Hello for Business, and certificate-based methods. It does not provide a consumer ranking or comparative test results, so it does not establish one method as universally best for every personal account.

What organizations should cover
CERT-In’s organization-focused guidance goes beyond the individual step of enabling MFA on personal accounts. Its August 7, 2026 Microsoft 365 advisory calls for MFA across users, applications, and client types, removal of unnecessary exclusions, and stronger controls such as conditional-access policies, device compliance, session controls, and review of privileged access. It also highlights phishing-resistant methods and monitoring for suspicious authentication.
CERT-In’s 2025 controls for micro, small, and medium enterprises identify critical systems, administrative accounts, and remote-access tools as priority areas for MFA. Its guidance for government entities also calls for MFA on user accounts in cloud services alongside a strong password policy. These are organization-specific controls, not additional setup mandates for every consumer.
