Syncplify Server! can be a fit when you need Windows or Linux deployment, virtual sites, automation, or a self-hosted HA cluster; Cerberus is a Windows-based option with a broader documented protocol set, including FTP, SFTP, FTPS, HTTP/S, and SCP. Neither is automatically the better replacement: match the protocol and identity requirements, edition, HA design, and licensing period before migrating. The title’s “what I learned after switching” premise is not supported by a verified first-hand migration account, so this comparison sticks to documented product capabilities and vendor-listed prices.

Can Syncplify Server! replace Cerberus FTP Server?
It can be a candidate if your existing workflows use protocols and capabilities Syncplify documents: SFTP, FTPS, or HTTPS on Windows or Linux. It is not a like-for-like fit if a partner depends on FTP, SCP, or HTTP, since those protocols are listed for Cerberus but not in Syncplify’s documented protocol set. Confirm actual client behavior and protocol needs with every exchanging partner before changing endpoints.

- Client compatibility: record each partner’s protocol, port, host-key or certificate expectations, authentication method, and any scheduled transfer dependencies.
- Identity: determine whether users must be authenticated through Active Directory or LDAP, or through another mechanism. Cerberus documents AD/LDAP integration; establish that the selected edition and Syncplify configuration meet your policy.
- Security controls: map required TLS versions, SSH key algorithms, public-key authentication, integrity checks, audit trails, and any FIPS requirement to the current edition matrix. Cerberus lists several of these capabilities, but availability is edition-dependent.
- Isolation: identify whether separate virtual sites or tenant boundaries are necessary. Syncplify’s pricing page lists three virtual SFTP sites in Professional and unlimited virtual sites in Ultimate; verify current limits and implementation details.
- Operations: document scripts, APIs, log destinations, monitoring, backup and restore, and recovery procedures that must keep working after cutover.
How do their operating systems, protocols, and administration differ?
Cerberus: Windows deployment and a broader listed protocol set
Cerberus describes a Windows server product supporting FTP, SFTP, FTPS, HTTP/S, and SCP, plus secure public file sharing. Its product overview also lists TLS 1.3, RSA/DSA/elliptic-curve keys, Active Directory and LDAP integration, and SHA-256/SHA-512 file-integrity checking. These are vendor descriptions, not proof that every item is available in every edition or configured securely by default. Use the current feature matrix to verify the exact package you need.
Syncplify: Windows or Linux, with scripting and REST API
Syncplify documents self-hosted deployment on Windows or Linux and lists SFTP, FTPS, and HTTPS. Its product page describes SyncJS automation, virtual sites, a REST API, and a web client. The knowledge base says the server can run as a single node or as an HA cluster. Review the current knowledge base and product page for configuration details relevant to your environment.

How should you compare high availability?
Do not compare the phrase “HA” in two product descriptions as if it guarantees the same failure behavior. Establish which components are replicated, how clients reach the service, how state and configuration are synchronized, and what happens during node loss, maintenance, or network partition. Test recovery using your own transfer schedules, authentication systems, storage, and monitoring.
Syncplify’s pricing page says an HA deployment requires a license for each node. Its own comparison page claims built-in active-active HA for Syncplify and characterizes Cerberus as configuration sync paired with an external load balancer. Those are vendor-authored comparative claims; validate the precise architecture with technical documentation and the vendors for the versions and topology you plan to run.

Is Syncplify cheaper than Cerberus FTP Server?
Not on a simple sticker-price comparison. On October 7, 2026, Cerberus listed Professional at $1,599 per year and Enterprise at $3,499 per year, with Enterprise Plus quote-based. Syncplify listed Basic at $399, Professional at $849, and Ultimate at $1,599 as perpetual licenses. Those prices differ in license model and feature packaging, and Syncplify HA adds a license for each node. Cerberus states that it does not charge per user or connection. What should you verify before a migration?
- Inventory the current service: capture users and groups, permissions, virtual directories, endpoints, certificates and keys, firewall rules, scheduled jobs, log destinations, and partner-specific requirements.
- Map each dependency to the target: check protocol, identity integration, cryptographic policy, isolation, audit, and automation against the target edition and documentation. Record any incompatibility before scheduling a cutover.
- Recreate and test configuration: set up a non-production target and test representative inbound and outbound transfers, failure cases, permissions, logs, and recovery. Do not assume settings or data move directly between products.
- Plan the cutover and rollback: coordinate partner changes, DNS or firewall updates, credential/key handling, and a rollback trigger. Keep the existing endpoint and configuration recoverable until the new service is verified in production.
- Reconcile after cutover: verify expected files arrived intact, permissions and audit records are correct, and scheduled transfers complete. Monitor failures closely during the agreed transition window.
The vendor materials cited here do not establish a universal migration path, conversion utility, or a particular cutover outcome. Treat migration effort as environment-specific and confirm available vendor assistance before setting a timeline.
