Neither centralized exchanges (CEXs) nor decentralized exchanges (DEXs) are automatically the cheaper or better place to trade ETH. The right choice depends on your exact trading pair and order size, the live price and depth, all fees, and whether you want an exchange to hold your funds or prefer to authorize swaps from your own wallet.
How CEX and DEX trades work
Centralized exchanges use order books
A CEX such as Coinbase Advanced matches orders through an order book of bids and asks. You can place a market order to trade promptly at available prices or a limit order to specify a price. The amount you receive depends on the prices and quantities available as your order fills.

Coinbase Advanced displays order-book information and applies maker or taker fees. An order that fills immediately is treated as taker activity; an order that rests on the book and is later filled is maker activity. The fee depends on the product and your current fee tier.
DEXs swap against smart-contract pools
A DEX such as Uniswap lets you connect a wallet and authorize a swap that executes through smart contracts against pool liquidity. Uniswap describes a DEX as “a peer-to-peer marketplace that allows users to swap crypto assets without an intermediary” in its February 21, 2025 educational article, What is a Decentralized Exchange (DEX)?

A pool swap is not the same as an order matched against individual bids and asks. The quoted output depends on the pool’s state, the trade size, and the route used. A larger swap can move the pool price, reducing the amount received relative to the quoted starting price.
Compare the full cost of an ETH trade
Headline fees do not tell you which venue delivers more ETH or value for a particular trade. Compare the amount you will receive after visible charges, using the same pair, approximate size, and time.

Check the CEX order preview and fee schedule
Coinbase’s Coinbase Advanced fees page says, “Trading fees vary by product, fee tier, and whether an order provides liquidity (maker) or takes liquidity (taker).” Check your account’s current fee information and the order preview rather than assuming a single rate applies to every trade.

Coinbase distinguishes Advanced order-book trading from simpler trade quotes: it says Advanced does not include a spread because customers interact directly with the order book, while simple trade quotes can include spread and fees. Costs can also vary with order size, market conditions, payment method, asset, and jurisdiction. Confirm the product and final preview you are using.
Include pool fees and network fees in a DEX quote
For a DEX, look at the pool fee, expected output, price impact, and route, then account for the network transaction cost separately. Uniswap’s swap documentation explains that swaps execute against pool liquidity and that transaction ordering is affected by gas offered. A low pool fee alone does not prove a DEX swap is cheaper overall, particularly when Ethereum network costs are high.
Compare the same trade at roughly the same time
- Choose the same ETH pair and approximately the same order size on each venue.
- On a CEX, inspect the order preview, fee, spread, and book depth at the size you intend to trade.
- On a DEX, inspect the quoted output, pool fee, route, price impact, and current network fee.
- Compare the final amount received after visible charges. Include a withdrawal or network cost only if it applies to what you plan to do next.
Quotes and market conditions can change between checks, so a comparison is useful only when the pair, size, and timing are reasonably aligned. This method helps evaluate a specific trade; it does not establish that one venue type is always cheaper.

How to assess ETH liquidity and slippage
Liquidity is specific to a pair, trade size, venue, and moment. For an order book, inspect the spread and the quantities available near the current price. For a pool swap, inspect the quoted output and price impact for your intended amount. In either model, a trade that exceeds nearby liquidity can receive a worse average price.

Uniswap Labs researchers Gordon Liao and Dan Robinson reported in a May 5, 2022 analysis that Uniswap v3 had about twice the liquidity of Binance and Coinbase for ETH/USD; about three times Binance’s and 4.5 times Coinbase’s for ETH/BTC; and about three times major centralized exchanges on average for ETH/mid-cap pairs. These are historical findings from a protocol-sponsored analysis, not a current ranking. The authors also excluded transaction costs such as Ethereum gas, venue fees, and unexpected pre-trade slippage. See their analysis for its scope and methodology.
Those figures cannot tell you which venue currently has the best executable price for your trade. Check the live book or pool quote for the exact pair and amount instead.
Custody: who controls the assets and approvals?
On a CEX, assets left on-platform are hosted balances
A CEX account can make trading and account-based custody straightforward, but funds left there are held under the provider’s custody and operational arrangements. You rely on the platform to provide account access and handle custody; this is not a guarantee about the outcome of any particular provider’s operations. On a DEX, your wallet authorizes the transaction
With a DEX, you connect a wallet and sign the transaction or approvals needed for the swap. Self-custody gives you control over wallet access, but also makes you responsible for protecting that access and reviewing what you authorize. Losing wallet access or approving a harmful transaction can put funds at risk.
Self-custody does not remove smart-contract, token, phishing, or user-error risks. A hardware wallet may help protect access to private keys, but it does not make a malicious approval safe or guarantee that a protocol or token is secure.

Uniswap says users need a wallet, assets to swap, and enough ETH to pay Ethereum transaction fees. Network fees change over time, so check the live estimate before signing rather than relying on a fixed cost. A wallet-based workflow also requires you to verify the token and transaction details yourself.

Because token access on DEXs is permissionless, availability does not establish that a token or contract is trustworthy. Consider whether you can manage wallet security and transaction approvals comfortably before choosing this route.
Which venue fits your trade?

Uniswap Labs reported more than $4 trillion in all-time swap volume in its February 21, 2025 DEX explainer. That is a protocol-reported cumulative figure at publication, not an independent measure of current ETH liquidity or proof that a given swap will execute better.
