Centauri Migrate is an early open-source CLI project whose author describes it as a way to extract Firestore data, infer a relational schema, and draft Postgres row-level security (RLS) policies. It may help explore a migration, but the available project announcement does not establish production readiness: the author reported emulator tests, not a trial against a production-scale Firestore project.
What Centauri Migrate says it does
The project’s author describes a workflow that examines Firestore data, infers a candidate relational schema from its shape, and translates Firestore Security Rules into candidate Postgres RLS policies. These are author-described capabilities, not independently verified results across different production datasets. The project discussed here is the repository at github.com/KeymelGaston/centauri-migrate; the name is also used by unrelated projects.

The author says the workflow is dry-run by default and does not apply changes automatically, summarizing the behavior as: “Nothing applies automatically.” The announcement also says uncertain policy translations default to deny and low-confidence results are flagged for manual review. Treat generated policies as proposals: review them against the intended access behavior and test them before relying on them.

What the reported testing establishes—and what it doesn’t
In a 2026 announcement, the author reported 84 tests passing end to end against the Firestore emulator. The same announcement said the tool had not yet been run against a real production-scale Firestore project. The test count is self-reported; it is not an independent benchmark, a migration success rate, or evidence of production performance.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters for data with unusual nesting, inconsistent fields, large collections, or rules whose behavior depends on application context. A successful emulator test can show that a test suite passed in that environment, but it does not show how well inferred schemas or policy translations handle every real project.
Plan the migration beyond schema generation
Schema inference and rule translation address only part of a Firestore-to-Postgres move. A practical plan also has to account for data transformation, application changes, validation, and cutover. The Supabase community discussion on migrating Firestore data offers project-level considerations, not a universal recipe or a specification for Centauri Migrate.

- Inspect and export the source. Review actual documents, including nested objects, optional fields, and inconsistent shapes. The author describes Centauri Migrate as extracting data and inferring a candidate model from its shape.
- Choose how to represent nested data. Decide which fields belong in normalized relational tables and which may be better retained as JSONB. The right balance depends on query patterns and how the application uses the data; automatic schema inference cannot make that product decision for you.
- Make transformations explicit. Specify how Firestore values map to Postgres types, including timestamps. Community advice highlights explicit timestamp conversion rather than assuming source representations will load correctly as destination values.
- Review access rules and application behavior. Compare candidate RLS policies with the real access rules and test allowed and denied cases. Data migration alone does not migrate authentication identities or update application queries and authorization assumptions.
- Load in a resumable way. Consider manageable batches and idempotent upserts so a failed or repeated load can be recovered without blindly duplicating rows. These are planning recommendations from the community discussion, not verified Centauri Migrate features.
- Validate before cutover. Compare source and destination counts, inspect representative records, and test application behavior. If both systems must operate during a transition, decide how writes are synchronized and how to prevent loops or conflicting updates.
How to judge whether it fits your project
Assess the tool against the migration risks that matter in your application, rather than treating a generated schema as a finished migration.

- Access control: Can you verify the RLS policies against expected user access, including edge cases? A default-deny outcome is safer than an unsupported allow, but it can still block legitimate application behavior until reviewed.
- Operational safety: Confirm what dry-run output contains and how you would make the load repeatable, validate it, and recover from failure. The announcement supports the dry-run claim; it does not establish resumability, rollback, or cutover tooling.
- Evidence of maturity: Emulator test results and real-project validation answer different questions. The author’s announcement disclosed no production-scale trial at that time.
- Scope beyond data: Account separately for authentication, application code, and any period when both databases must coexist.
What the project announcement leaves open
The available project-specific evidence is the author’s announcement, rather than an independently inspected repository or a production deployment report. It supports describing the intended workflow and the author’s stated safeguards, but not asserting current release status, installation steps, license, supported Postgres variants, exact Firestore Rules coverage, or code-level limits. Check the repository directly before relying on any of those details.
A Supabase community discussion that began in 2020, with a 2023 update and later replies, also mentions a community migration tool and a Firebase wrapper. Their mention does not establish that either is compatible with Centauri Migrate or currently maintained. Treat them as separate options to evaluate, not as part of this project.
