What a CD-ROM audio cable does
During analog playback, the drive sends audio through its analog audio output and the cable carries that signal to an input on the computer’s audio hardware. Intel describes the ATAPI CD-ROM connector as a four-pin connection between an internal drive and the audio mixer (Intel support documentation); ASUS documentation calls the input CD-IN and directs users to connect it to the drive’s analog output (ASUS Xonar manual).

The cable is separate from the drive’s IDE/PATA data ribbon and power lead. LG’s CRD-82 manual also distinguishes the drive’s analog and digital audio output connectors, so “CD-ROM audio cable” in this context generally means the analog lead (LG CRD-82 manual).
What the connector looks like—and why pin count is not enough
A four-pin arrangement is common in the cited documentation, but that does not establish one universal layout for every drive, motherboard, or sound card. For example, the ASUS P5K WS manual labels its four-pin CD-IN header right audio, ground, ground, and left audio; those labels describe that board, not every header (ASUS P5K WS manual).

Before connecting or replacing a lead, check the labels and manuals for both ends: the drive’s analog audio output and the board or sound card’s CD-IN/audio input. Match connector style and pin layout rather than relying on “4-pin” alone.
Do you need one to play audio CDs?
Not necessarily. Some systems support digital CD audio without a separate analog cable. Intel notes that some desktop boards provide a digital audio solution instead of the extra CD-ROM connector (Intel support documentation). ASUS’s Xonar instructions likewise say ordinary digital CD playback can be used without connecting the analog lead (ASUS Xonar manual).

Another documented option is digital audio over the IDE data cable, when the system supports it and the relevant setting is enabled; Supermicro describes this alternative in its FAQ (Supermicro FAQ). The available path depends on the particular drive, audio hardware, operating system, and configuration. If digital playback already works, an analog cable may not be needed; if a setup relies on the drive’s analog output, the matching internal lead and input are required.

How to identify the right replacement
- Find the drive output. Check the drive label or manual for its analog audio output; do not mistake a digital output for the analog connector.
- Find the audio input. Look for a CD-IN or equivalent audio header on the motherboard or sound card, and consult its manual for pin assignments.
- Compare both ends. Confirm connector shape and pin layout at the drive and audio input. Similar pin counts alone do not prove compatibility.
- Decide whether the analog path is needed. If the system uses supported digital CD audio, the analog lead may be unnecessary. Otherwise, connect the drive’s analog output to the corresponding input as the hardware manual specifies.
For a repair or restoration, “CD-ROM audio cable” and “4-pin CD audio cable” are useful search terms, but verify the exact drive-side and board-side connectors before choosing a replacement.
