In a well-known historical pattern, ccmsetup.log shows the Windows Update Agent prerequisite WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe failing with exit code 775 immediately before the final error. Start with the first meaningful failure in the log, then choose the repair that matches it; do not assume the same fix applies to every Windows or Configuration Manager version.
What does error 0x80070307 mean?
The hexadecimal value 0x307 is decimal 775. That is why some logs show a prerequisite installer returning exit code 775 and then report CcmSetup failed with error code 0x80070307. The final line can be CCMSetup propagating a child installer’s failure; it does not establish that Windows Update is always the cause.
A historical case matching this pattern involved WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe. Reports from early Windows 10 deployments associated it with an older Configuration Manager client or site release. A 2015-era report recommended upgrading the then-current SCCM hierarchy for that scenario; that advice is not a universal fix for current Windows 10 or Windows 11 deployments. Find the first failure in the logs
Open the main setup log at C:WindowsccmsetupLogsccmsetup.log. Read the 10–30 lines immediately before the final error and identify the earliest actionable failure, rather than repeating the final code as the diagnosis.

Depending on the stage, also inspect C:WindowsccmsetupLogsclient.msi.log, logs under C:WindowsCCMLogs, and Windows Update logs. On modern Windows versions, create a readable Windows Update log with Get-WindowsUpdateLog.
If the log names the Windows Update Agent prerequisite
Check Windows Update services
Run these checks from an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell session:
sc query wuauserv
sc start wuauservGet-Service wuauserv,bits,cryptsvc | Select-Object Name,Status,StartTypeIf a service will not start, resolve that Windows servicing or policy problem and review the Windows Update log before retrying setup. Microsoft’s WSUS client-agent troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether the Windows Update service starts and whether the agent is current when update-client behavior fails. Do not begin by deleting the entire SoftwareDistribution or catroot2 directories; collect logs and follow a documented recovery procedure if a reset is justified.

Confirm the OS and Configuration Manager versions
Record the Windows edition, build, and architecture, as well as the Configuration Manager site release and client package version. For example:

Select-Object WindowsProductName, WindowsVersion, OsBuildNumber, OsArchitectureYou can also run winver; on older Windows versions, use systeminfo. Confirm the target OS is supported by the specific Configuration Manager release and that the client source is intended for it. If an old client package tries to install a prerequisite that is obsolete or incompatible with the target OS, replace the package with a current supported client source rather than forcing that old prerequisite. A historical report describes the same general signature on Windows 10 build 10240, but it should not be treated as evidence that the same cause applies to a current system: the Windows 10 build 10240 report.
Use /skipprereq only when the prerequisite is truly unnecessary
Microsoft documents /skipprereq:<filename.exe>, including multiple filenames separated by semicolons. For example, the option can exclude WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe from setup. Use it only after confirming that the named prerequisite is already installed or genuinely unnecessary for a supported OS, that the client source is appropriate, and that the log identifies that prerequisite as the blocker. Test the resulting client, including policy and management-point communication. Skipping a prerequisite to conceal an unsupported OS or broken Windows Update stack can simply move the failure to a later stage. See Microsoft’s CCMSetup installation properties.

Retry from a complete, current client source
Use CCMSetup.exe as the bootstrapper. Microsoft notes that it obtains and installs the client MSI and required files; do not launch client.msi directly. CCMSetup parameters must precede client MSI properties. The exact values depend on your site, authentication, transport, and network configuration.

C:ClientCCMSetup.exe /source:C:Client /mp:<ManagementPoint> SMSSITECODE=<SiteCode>Check that the source is reachable and contains the full client package. A local copy can help distinguish a source or network problem from an endpoint prerequisite failure, but it will not correct an incompatible client package. Microsoft documents /source, /mp, and the general CCMSetup syntax in its installation properties reference. Choose the repair based on the preceding log entry

Pending reboots, endpoint security controls, application control, and servicing state can also interfere with installation. Treat them as leads only when the logs or a comparison with a working device supports them. If only one endpoint fails, compare its OS build, local policy, Windows Update state, and security controls with a working device. If many endpoints fail together, investigate the client package distribution, site and distribution-point health, and recent servicing changes before repairing devices one at a time.

Do not remove an installed client merely because a prerequisite failed. If the logs show a damaged or partial installation, or a supported repair procedure calls for it, use CCMSetup’s uninstall option:

C:WindowsccmsetupCCMSetup.exe /uninstallAllow the uninstall to finish and reboot if required. Then reinstall from a complete, current client folder, for example:
C:ClientCCMSetup.exe /source:C:Client /mp:<ManagementPoint> SMSSITECODE=<SiteCode>Avoid manually deleting Configuration Manager directories, resetting WMI, or relying on unofficial cleanup utilities as a first response. /forceinstall removes an existing client and installs a new one; it does not repair a failed Windows Update prerequisite, so reserve it for a deliberate reinstall scenario after considering the state you may lose.
Verify the client after CCMSetup completes
A successful CCMSetup exit does not alone prove that the device is assigned and receiving policy. Check that the CcmExec service exists and runs, that the Configuration Manager control-panel applet is present, and that C:WindowsCCMCcmExec.exe exists. Review LocationServices.log, ClientIDManagerStartup.log, and PolicyAgent.log for normal initialization, site location, and policy retrieval. Confirm the device appears in the expected site and begins receiving policy before considering the recovery complete.
