ContentLibraryCleanup.exe finds and removes orphaned content from one Microsoft Configuration Manager distribution point (DP) at a time. Run it first in what-if mode without /delete, review the log, and only then perform an interactive deletion. It does not clean the site server’s content library and does not support a content-enabled cloud management gateway (CMG).

The utility is included with your Configuration Manager installation media. Microsoft’s documented behavior comes from a page last updated October 3, 2022, so use the copy shipped in your hierarchy’s CD.Latest folder and verify behavior against your installed build. Configuration Manager 2603 became globally available May 27, 2026, but Microsoft’s 2603 material does not document a cleanup-tool command change.

What the cleanup tool actually removes

The utility compares files on a specified DP with Configuration Manager provider data and identifies content that is no longer associated with a valid Configuration Manager object. In this context, “orphaned” means leftover DP content, not simply content that is old or large.

  • Orphaned DP files: candidates the tool is designed to remove.
  • Valid but unwanted content: a large application, driver package, operating-system image, or update package remains valid until you remove or retire its Configuration Manager object.
  • Failed or incomplete distribution: a distribution problem must be resolved; cleanup is not a repair or redistribution engine.
  • Site-server content: the tool cannot remove files from the site server’s content library.
  • CMG content: a content-enabled cloud management gateway is unsupported.

Microsoft documents the purpose, parameters, requirements, and limitations at Content library cleanup tool.

Check that your target is supported

Standard distribution point

You can run the tool locally on a DP or remotely from another computer. Supply one target DP’s fully qualified domain name (FQDN) per run.

Secondary-site distribution point

A secondary-site DP requires the parent primary site’s FQDN and site code so the tool can query the correct SMS Provider:

ContentLibraryCleanup.exe /dp dp-secondary.contoso.com /ps pri01.contoso.com /sc ABC

Primary site server or co-located DP

Do not treat a primary site server as a supported way to clean the site-server content library. Even when the DP role is installed on the same machine, Microsoft’s limitation remains: this utility cannot clean site-server library content. Remove obsolete applications, packages, driver packages, operating-system images, boot images, software-update packages, or other objects through the Configuration Manager console instead. Site processing and object relationships determine when related files are ultimately reclaimed.

Content-enabled CMG

Do not adapt the DP command for a CMG. Microsoft lists content-enabled CMGs as unsupported targets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare before running

  • Use an account with permissions equivalent to the Configuration Manager Full Administrator security role.
  • Have administrative access to the target server and the required Configuration Manager/SMS Provider WMI interfaces.
  • Open an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell session.
  • Use the target DP’s FQDN and confirm DNS, RPC, firewall, and WMI connectivity.
  • Check Monitoring for packages or deployments that are distributing, pending, or failed. Do not clean while content state is unresolved.
  • Choose a maintenance window appropriate for the DP’s client workload. Content operations during client access can leave incomplete data.
  • Record the DP, site version, command, log path, and before-and-after free space.

Never manually delete files from SCCMContentLibFileLib, PkgLib, or DataLib. Direct deletion can make the filesystem disagree with provider and WMI state.

Locate the Microsoft-supplied executable

From the site server, open:

<Configuration Manager installation directory>CD.LatestSMSSETUPTOOLSContentLibraryCleanupContentLibraryCleanup.exe

A typical installation might be:

cd "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Configuration Managercd.latestSMSSETUPTOOLSContentLibraryCleanup"

The installation path varies. Use the copy from your own hierarchy rather than an arbitrary internet download. Historical reports of 64-bit compatibility errors commonly involved an outdated or incorrect executable; Microsoft’s guidance was to use the CD.Latest copy.

Run a detection-only (what-if) scan

Omit /delete to identify candidates without removing anything:

ContentLibraryCleanup.exe /dp dp01.contoso.com

To place the log in a known directory:

ContentLibraryCleanup.exe /dp dp01.contoso.com /log C:SCCMLogsContentCleanup

By default, the log goes to the temporary directory of the account running the tool, on the computer where you launched it—not necessarily the DP. Use /log so operators and automation collect the result consistently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the result

  • Confirm the log names the intended DP and lists candidate content rather than an access or provider error.
  • Check each package or content ID in the console for active, pending, or failed distribution.
  • Investigate any candidate that corresponds to content recently redistributed, superseded, or under change control.
  • Do not infer that every listed byte is guaranteed to be immediately available as free space.

Delete only after the scan is understood

Interactive deletion uses:

ContentLibraryCleanup.exe /dp dp01.contoso.com /delete

With an explicit log directory:

ContentLibraryCleanup.exe /dp dp01.contoso.com /delete /log C:SCCMLogsContentCleanup

The tool prompts before deleting each file and supports individual confirmation, refusal, and “yes to all” behavior. Review the what-if output first, then run deletion against the same DP during the approved window. Afterward, validate the DP and redistribute or validate any content that was affected.

Quiet mode for established automation

ContentLibraryCleanup.exe /q /dp dp01.contoso.com /delete /log C:SCCMLogsContentCleanup

/q suppresses prompts and prevents the log from opening automatically. It is unsuitable for a first run. Use it only after a detection phase has been tested, with per-DP logging, sequencing or throttling, error handling, and a redistribution plan.

Parameter reference

Parameter Meaning When required or useful
/dp <FQDN> Target distribution point Required; one DP per run
/ps <FQDN> Parent primary site server Required for a secondary-site DP; optional for a primary-site DP
/sc <site code> Parent or associated primary site code Required for a secondary-site DP
/delete Deletes orphaned content Omit for what-if mode
/q Suppresses prompts and automatic log opening Use only after validation
/log <directory> Log destination Use a known local path or controlled network share

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause Correct response
Package is not fully installed A package or deployment is failed or still in progress Check Monitoring, resolve or cancel the distribution, redistribute if needed, then rerun what-if mode. Microsoft documented this issue for versions 2103 and earlier; its workaround was upgrading to 2107, where the tool warns and continues. Do not force deletion to bypass the message.
Unable to access remote WMI Missing RBAC or local-admin rights, provider/WMI failure, DNS, RPC, or firewall restrictions Test the FQDN and connectivity, verify Full Administrator-equivalent access and server rights, and repair provider or firewall problems before retrying. A Microsoft Q&A example discusses these layered access requirements: delete SCCM content library.
Executable appears incompatible with 64-bit Windows Wrong or outdated binary Run the executable from your site’s CD.LatestSMSSETUPTOOLSContentLibraryCleanup directory. This is a historical troubleshooting case, not a confirmed current-branch limitation. See Microsoft Q&A.
Log lists candidates but no space is reclaimed Scan ran without /delete, deletion failed, valid content was retained, files are open, or the wrong drive was measured Read the deletion results, verify the content-library volume and execution host, allow Windows storage reporting to refresh, and compare measurements on the same drive.
Site-server content remains Unsupported target for this utility Remove or retire obsolete Configuration Manager objects in the console and allow site processing to complete.

The 2107 hotfix notes also describe missing-package and provider-query timeout failures: Configuration Manager 2107 hotfix 10096997.

Site-server storage pressure

Use console lifecycle management for obsolete objects. The cleanup tool cannot substitute for deleting an application, package, driver package, image, boot image, or update package that the site still considers valid.

Inspection before remediation

ContentLibraryExplorer.exe can inspect content on a DP but does not directly manipulate the library. See Microsoft’s Content Library Explorer documentation.

Transfer or repair problems

Follow Microsoft’s content-library troubleshooting procedures rather than deleting files while clients are accessing content: content library transfer and repair guidance.

Multiple-DP automation

Community PowerShell wrappers can call the Microsoft executable, but they are not replacements for it. Sequence DPs, retain each log, stop on errors, and require a successful detection review before enabling /q deletion.
