Whether InPrivate is “not working” depends on what you want Edge to do. Edge kiosk mode is designed to run an InPrivate session; a normal Edge app allowed in a Windows restricted desktop is not automatically an InPrivate kiosk. If Edge opens InPrivate but your app needs a persistent sign-in, use a restricted user experience with Edge running normally—not Edge kiosk mode. If Edge should be InPrivate but is not, first check how it is launched.
First identify which kind of kiosk you configured
“Multi-app kiosk” is often used for two distinct Windows Assigned Access setups. The profile type and Edge launch arguments—not simply the fact that Edge is allowed—determine whether Edge itself is in kiosk mode.
| Configuration | What it does to Edge | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
KioskModeApp with Edge kiosk arguments |
Launches Edge in its kiosk experience, which uses InPrivate browsing. | Public browsing, anonymous sessions, and full-screen signage. |
AllAppList restricted user experience with Edge allowed |
Allows Edge as a desktop app. If launched without kiosk arguments, it runs as normal Edge, subject to policy and profile cleanup. | Multiple permitted Windows apps and workflows that need a normal browser profile. |
Microsoft distinguishes KioskModeApp, a full-screen kiosk profile, from AllAppList, a restricted desktop with selected applications. See Microsoft’s Assigned Access configuration-file documentation.
Edge kiosk mode is documented for Edge version 87 and later; InPrivate navigation in the relevant kiosk experiences is supported from Edge version 89. Both public-browsing and full-screen digital-signage kiosk experiences use InPrivate. See Microsoft’s Edge kiosk-mode documentation.

Check whether Edge is actually launching in kiosk mode
Look for these arguments in the Assigned Access configuration, an app shortcut, an Intune-delivered configuration, or the Edge process command line:
--kiosk--edge-kiosk-type=fullscreen--edge-kiosk-type=public-browsing--kiosk-idle-timeout-minutes=5(an optional idle-reset argument)
For example, Microsoft’s Assigned Access documentation shows a kiosk launch pattern like this:
<KioskModeApp
v4:ClassicAppPath="%ProgramFiles(x86)%MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe"
v4:ClassicAppArguments="--kiosk https://www.contoso.com/ --edge-kiosk-type=fullscreen --kiosk-idle-timeout-minutes=2" />
That is an Edge kiosk launch, not a normal Edge profile. The example’s URL and timeout are illustrative configuration values, not requirements. See Microsoft’s Assigned Access kiosk quickstart.

Inspect the Assigned Access configuration
- Open the XML or deployment configuration used for the device.
- Search for
KioskModeApp,ClassicAppArguments,--kiosk, and--edge-kiosk-type. - Check that the intended account is assigned to the intended profile. Allowing
msedge.exein a multi-app profile alone does not turn it into Edge kiosk mode.
Inspect the running Edge process
In an elevated or appropriately permitted PowerShell session, run:
Get-CimInstance Win32_Process -Filter "Name = 'msedge.exe'" |
Select-Object ProcessId, CommandLine
If the displayed command line contains --kiosk or --edge-kiosk-type, Edge kiosk mode is active. If it does not, investigate the profile, Edge policy, and account mapping rather than assuming kiosk behavior.
Check Edge policies and version
- Where accessible, open
edge://policyand select Reload policies. Review whetherInPrivateModeAvailabilityappears and whether Edge reports it as applied, ignored, or conflicting. - Open
edge://settings/helpto check the installed Edge version. - Test the same Edge executable outside Assigned Access, using a test account and comparing launches with and without kiosk arguments. This can help separate a browser-policy issue from an Assigned Access restriction.
Assigned Access kiosk experiences require sign-in at the device console and are not supported over Remote Desktop. A remote session is therefore not a valid test of the kiosk experience; see Microsoft’s Assigned Access overview.

If Edge should open in InPrivate but does not
Confirm that the deployment is intended to use Edge kiosk mode. If it is, check the profile type, launch arguments, executable path, and account-to-profile mapping. A normal Edge app in an AllAppList profile will not become an Edge kiosk just because it is on a kiosk device.
- Verify that the assigned profile and Edge launch command match the intended kiosk design.
- Check the Edge executable path on the device. Common locations are
C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exeandC:Program FilesMicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe; use the path that exists on the target image. - Review
edge://policyand remove or resolve policies that conflict with the intended kiosk setup. - Confirm that the kiosk account is mapped to the profile you changed, then sign out or restart and test at the local console.
- If the expected launch command is correct but Edge still behaves differently, check whether a third-party shell, endpoint security product, or application-control rule is altering or blocking the launch.
Do not assume that allowing Edge in a restricted multi-app desktop automatically gives it InPrivate kiosk behavior; that behavior comes from Edge kiosk mode and its launch configuration.
If Edge opens InPrivate but your app needs a normal sign-in
That behavior is expected when the launch uses Edge kiosk mode. Changing a policy is not a dependable way to convert that session to a persistent profile: Microsoft explicitly lists InPrivateModeAvailability as unsupported in Edge kiosk mode.

If the workflow needs a normal Edge profile, the usual architecture is a Windows restricted user experience with an AllAppList profile and Edge permitted as a desktop app. Launch the Edge executable without --kiosk or --edge-kiosk-type. For example, a schema-specific app entry can take this form:
<App
DesktopAppPath="%ProgramFiles(x86)%MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe"
rs5:AutoLaunch="true"
rs5:AutoLaunchArguments="--start-maximized" />
This fragment is only an example. The XML namespaces, app declaration, and supported options must match the Assigned Access schema on the Windows build you deploy. Validate the configuration against Microsoft’s current schema documentation; do not paste an isolated fragment into production.
This design is a better fit when an application depends on a persistent browser profile, cookies, SSO, or extensions, but it does not guarantee that every sign-in flow or Edge feature will work. Test the actual Windows and Edge builds, identity configuration, web application, and policies.

What InPrivate changes—and what normal Edge changes
When all InPrivate windows close, Edge deletes browsing history, cookies and site data, passwords, autofill data, permissions, and hosted app data from that session. That can interfere with workflows that depend on session persistence. InPrivate limits local retention; it does not hide activity from an organization, school, internet provider, or the websites visited. See Microsoft’s explanation of InPrivate browsing.
A normal Edge profile in a restricted user experience can retain browser data, but retention depends on Edge policies, account and sign-out behavior, profile deletion, and any device cleanup tools. That can be useful on a dedicated authenticated device and risky on a public device shared by unrelated people. Decide whether data should persist and implement an appropriate reset or cleanup mechanism.
Capabilities to account for
- Microsoft lists extensions as unsupported in Edge kiosk mode. A normal Edge launch in a restricted desktop may allow them, subject to policy and deployment testing.
- Do not promise that turning off InPrivate through
InPrivateModeAvailabilitywill make an Edge kiosk session persistent. - If anonymous access is the goal, InPrivate is a useful privacy boundary for local browser data, not a guarantee of anonymity.
- If persistent sign-in is the goal, validate cookies, redirects, SSO, Conditional Access, MFA, downloads, pop-ups, printing, and sign-out behavior with the target app.
Common causes of confusing results
- Using the wrong profile type:
KioskModeAppandAllAppListserve different purposes, even if both are described informally as kiosks. - Leaving kiosk arguments in an autolaunch entry: An
AllAppListprofile can still launch Edge in kiosk mode if the arguments remain. - Applying an unsupported policy: A policy can appear in management without controlling the kiosk behavior if Edge does not support it in that mode.
- Testing over Remote Desktop: Assigned Access kiosk behavior requires local console sign-in.
- Identity requirements that need interaction: Conditional Access requirements such as MFA or Terms of Use may cause sign-in problems for Assigned Access profiles unless the flow has been specifically validated. See Microsoft’s profile configuration guidance.
- Microsoft-account profile limitations: Microsoft notes that, beginning with Edge version 116, certain policies do not apply to profiles signed in with a Microsoft account. Check the current Edge policy reference for the policy and profile involved.
- Assuming removal restores everything: Removing Assigned Access may not restore every previous shell or Start menu state. Microsoft calls out this risk in its Assigned Access kiosk guidance.
Verify the deployment before putting it into service
- Confirm the target Windows edition supports Assigned Access. Microsoft lists supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions including Pro, Enterprise and Enterprise LTSC, Education, and IoT Enterprise and IoT Enterprise LTSC.
- Confirm UAC is enabled and test by signing in locally at the device console.
- Record whether the intended profile is
KioskModeApporAllAppList. - Check the actual Edge command line and executable path on the target image.
- Review
edge://policy, including whether any relevant policy is unsupported in the active mode. - Test the required authentication and session behavior, then verify that shared-device browser data is either retained intentionally or cleared as intended.
For Assigned Access troubleshooting and profile-mapping problems, see Microsoft’s kiosk-mode troubleshooting guidance.
