CBR vs. VBR for Streaming Prerecorded 4K 60fps Video to YouTube Live

YouTube specifies CBR for live encoder input. Compare its 4K 60 fps bitrate targets by codec, set keyframes correctly, and test your prerecorded-video output before going live.

Use CBR for the stream sent to YouTube Live. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), including when a prerecorded file is being played out as a live stream. For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, the recommended bitrate depends on the ingest codec: 50 Mbps for H.264, or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Those are YouTube’s recommendations, not results from a CBR-versus-VBR test of prerecorded-video software.

CBR or VBR: which should you use?

Set the outgoing live encoder to CBR. In a prerecorded-video workflow, the file is played through software or a service that sends an encoded live feed to YouTube. The relevant setting is the bitrate mode used for that outgoing feed—not simply whether the original file was encoded with CBR or VBR.

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance specifies CBR. It does not publish a separate VBR exception for prerecorded material or a comparative quality test of CBR and VBR playout applications. So treat CBR as YouTube’s platform guidance for the live ingest, rather than as proof that every application handles every source file identically. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (accessed October 3, 2026).

What if the prerecorded file itself is VBR?

A VBR source file does not by itself answer what bitrate mode the live output uses. If your playback or streaming application encodes the file into a live feed, configure that encoder for CBR. If the application sends the source through a different pipeline, check its output or ingest settings rather than assuming the file’s encoding mode determines YouTube’s live-stream mode.

What bitrate for YouTube Live 4K 60fps?

Choose the row matching the video codec actually sent to YouTube. YouTube lists separate minimum and recommended bitrates for 2160p at 60 fps:

Ingest video codec Listed minimum Recommended bitrate
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
AV1 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

These are the values in YouTube Help’s encoder-settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not independent measurements or guarantees of picture quality. The minimum is not the recommended target. Use the recommended value when your encoder and sustained upload connection can support it reliably. If they cannot, test a lower setting that remains at or above the listed minimum for your codec, and check stream health before relying on it.

Allow for the whole upload, not just the video bitrate

The connection must sustain the stream while also carrying its audio and other network traffic. Do not assume a speed-test result guarantees a stable live upload at the same rate. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.

  • Protocol: Use RTMPS where your encoder or playout service supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS. YouTube also lists RTMP.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. Set the bitrate according to the codec being ingested, using the table above.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps. Match the output frame rate to the content and the stream you intend to send.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check that the selected encoder output includes the audio you expect.
  • Scan and color for SDR: YouTube’s advanced recommendations include progressive scan and Rec. 709 for SDR.

YouTube says 4K streams use normal latency; its low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K. This is a YouTube setting limitation, not something switching between CBR and VBR changes.

Prepare and test a prerecorded 4K stream

  1. Confirm the output, not only the file. Check what codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio format the playout application will send to YouTube. A 4K 60 fps source file does not establish that the live output is also 4K 60 fps.
  2. Configure the live encoder. Select CBR, the appropriate codec-specific bitrate target, a two-second keyframe interval, and a supported audio format. Use RTMPS if available.
  3. Connect the encoder to the intended YouTube live event. Use the stream key for that event in the encoder or playout service. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the associated destination. The exact menu names depend on the encoder and YouTube workflow, so follow the current instructions shown in your account and application rather than relying on a universal UI path.
  4. Rehearse with the actual material. Use the same prerecorded file, audio, output resolution and frame rate, encoder settings, and network planned for the live stream. YouTube specifically recommends testing with representative audio and movement.
  5. Check stream health before the real broadcast. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the intended resolution and frame rate and that the stream is stable. If the output is not stable, reduce the bitrate or troubleshoot the connection and encoding load before starting the event.

YouTube’s testing advice is to test before starting and to include audio and movement similar to the intended stream. A static test image alone will not exercise the same video and audio conditions as the actual prerecorded program.

Copyright and prerecorded-content checks

Before sending a prerecorded program live, confirm you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, music, and other material it contains, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules for your channel and content. The encoder-settings guidance establishes technical parameters; it does not determine whether a particular recording is authorized or eligible for monetization.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
Stream health is poor or the feed stalls The upload connection cannot sustain the configured live bitrate, or competing traffic is using bandwidth. Test under representative conditions, reduce the bitrate if necessary while respecting the codec’s listed minimum, and monitor stream health again.
The stream does not match the 4K 60 fps target The playout output settings differ from the source file, or the selected encoder path does not produce the intended format. Inspect the output codec, resolution, and frame rate in the playout application and YouTube’s received-stream information; correct the output before going live.
YouTube reports a keyframe issue The encoder’s keyframe interval is longer than recommended. Set the interval to two seconds and ensure it does not exceed four seconds.
Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong The playout or encoder output may not include the expected audio track or supported audio encoding. Check the selected audio track and output format; YouTube lists AAC and MP3. Include audio in the rehearsal.
The encoder cannot connect to YouTube The destination, stream key, or protocol configuration may not match the selected live event. Verify the event destination and key in the account and encoder, then test the connection before the broadcast. Do not share or publish the key.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
