What Cats Lock does—and why it can be useful
Cats Lock is a macOS utility for temporarily blocking keyboard input without closing your MacBook or locking the whole Mac. That matters when you want to keep a presentation, video call, download, or other on-screen task visible while preventing stray keystrokes.

The problem is familiar to anyone whose cat has walked across a keyboard: a few accidental keys can select text, change a filename, or send a message before you notice. Those are examples described by the developer, not measured incident rates. The same kind of lock can also help when a dog, toddler, or nearby activity might reach the keyboard; those are user-reported situations rather than independently validated outcomes.
The praise in the title is a verdict, not a claim that the app is essential for every Mac owner. It earns a place for people who want a quick, reversible way to prevent keyboard input without interrupting what is on screen.

How to choose a lock mode

A separate external keyboard is optional, not a requirement. If that workflow suits you, an external keyboard for Mac can provide a way to keep typing while Built-in Lock blocks the laptop keyboard; the available sources do not establish a preferred model.
Smart Detect: useful idea, with an important caveat
Smart Detect arrived as a beta in version 1.4.0 on June 26, 2026, and left beta in version 2.0.0 on September 30, 2026, according to the release notes. The developer says it runs on-device and can distinguish cat-like input from ordinary typing. The developer also acknowledged false lockouts during beta and says the feature was tuned over several months. Those notes indicate iteration, not a quantified reliability guarantee.

If a false lock would interrupt a time-sensitive task, manual locking is the more predictable choice because you control when it activates. If you try Smart Detect, its sensitivity settings and option to ignore single-key holds offer ways to adjust behavior; test it in a low-stakes situation before relying on it during important work.

The developer’s privacy policy, last updated September 8, 2026, says the app collects, transmits, and shares no personal data, and operates without accounts, analytics, telemetry, tracking SDKs, microphone, camera, or network access. These are the developer’s disclosures, not the findings of an independent audit. The policy also says Apple may provide developers with aggregated App Store usage data.

According to that policy, Smart Detect evaluates keystroke timing and key codes—not the characters typed—and does not store, log, or send that information. Settings and imported sounds or photos are stored locally in the app sandbox. Basic keyboard locking needs no special permission; Smart Detect, function-row locking, and built-in keyboard or trackpad locking request macOS Accessibility permission if enabled. The policy says Cats Lock does not use Input Monitoring.
Version, price, and compatibility
The official release notes list version 2.0.0, released September 30, 2026. The homepage lists a $4.99 one-time purchase with no subscription; check the live listing before buying, since App Store pricing can change. The developer’s homepage also lists customizable lock-screen appearance, profiles and sounds, and seven languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Italian, and Japanese.

The developer’s materials differ slightly on the minimum macOS version: the release notes say macOS Ventura (13.0) or later, while the September 30 announcement says macOS 13.1 or later. Check the current Mac App Store requirements before installing rather than relying on a precise minimum from those conflicting statements.

What the app does not replace
Cats Lock is for preventing input while a cat or other activity is near the keyboard. A keyboard-cleaning utility such as CleanMyKeyboard addresses wiping keys; the developer distinguishes that task from stopping a cat that remains on the keyboard. They solve different problems, and the available sources do not establish that Cats Lock is the only Mac utility of its kind.

The app has been actively revised: its release notes describe sensitivity adjustments, fewer false locks, a single-key-hold option, and a fix to prevent Command-Tab from slipping through while locked. That history is useful context, but it is not an independent reliability test. Early coverage from May 2026 reported launch prices of $2.99 at 9to5Mac and $3 at Engadget; those are historical figures, not the current price listed by the developer.
