Choose a Cats Lock alternative by what you want it to do: Cats Lock blocks accidental keyboard input, while desktop-pet apps add animated characters to your Mac screen. A virtual cat may make your desktop more playful, but it is not a substitute for a keyboard lock.
Which kind of Cats Lock alternative do you need?
There are two different needs behind searches for “Cats Lock alternatives”: preventing a cat or child from triggering keys, and adding a cat that lives on your desktop. Cats Lock is designed for the first. Most of the other options below are desktop companions, not keyboard-protection tools.

- To prevent accidental typing: look for a keyboard lock with the controls and access you need. Cats Lock offers a manual lock and optional automatic detection.
- For a playful desktop: choose between a mostly animated pet, one that follows the cursor, or a more interactive character.
“Lightweight” appears in some publishers’ descriptions, but there are no comparable CPU, memory, or battery-use measurements available here. The comparisons below therefore focus on stated features and requirements rather than performance rankings.

Cats Lock: for stopping accidental key presses
Cats Lock’s developer describes it as a Mac App Store app with one-click keyboard locking, optional Smart Detect, a silent Stealth Lock, keyboard-lock profiles, and menu-bar controls. It also describes an option to keep an external keyboard active while locking a MacBook’s built-in keyboard. These are publisher-stated features, not independent test results. How to choose between them
If keyboard protection is the priority
Choose a keyboard lock rather than a desktop pet. For Cats Lock, consider whether manual locking is enough or whether you want its optional Smart Detect, and check which controls require Accessibility permission. If you need to lock only the built-in keyboard while retaining an external one, the developer says Cats Lock includes that option.
If you want a passive desktop companion
Clowder’s peek-a-boo animation is the most understated fit among these descriptions. Pets Therapy is a candidate if you want several virtual animals rather than a single cat, but check the Mac listing for the device-specific experience.

- PACKAGING: Individually wrapped for cleanliness and easy distribution.
- BEHAVIOR REWARD: Use as positive reinforcement for good classroom conduct.
- ORGANIZATION INCENTIVE: Motivate students to maintain tidy and organized desks.
If you want the pet to react to you
OpenDesktopPets is the cursor-following choice, with bundled assets and project-described offline operation. DeskCat offers more direct interactions such as petting, feeding, and play. DesktopCat is distinct: its site describes a character personalized from photos, rather than a conventional roaming desktop pet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf privacy or permissions matter
Separate permissions from privacy promises. Cats Lock’s App Store listing identifies Accessibility permission for some optional controls and says Smart Detect does not use Input Monitoring. DeskCat warns that Screen Recording and Accessibility access may be needed. OpenDesktopPets describes offline assets, while DesktopCat’s site says photos stay local. Treat each privacy or offline statement as the publisher’s claim, and check the app’s current permission prompts and policies before use.

What “lightweight” does—and does not—tell you
Clowder and OpenDesktopPets use “lightweight” in their own descriptions. That wording does not establish how either app compares with the others in processor use, memory, or battery impact. No comparable resource-use figures are stated in the cited materials, so there is no evidence-based performance winner here. Compare compatibility, interactions, permissions, and the exact behavior you want instead.
