Catalytic Converters Go Nano: What Mazda’s 2007 Plan Claimed

Mazda said in 2007 that fixing sub-five-nanometre precious-metal particles in ceramic spheres could reduce catalyst metal use. The report documents a claim and a plan, not confirmed production adoption.

Mazda’s 2007 nano-catalyst announcement described a way to keep precious-metal particles smaller and more exposed inside a catalytic converter, with the stated aim of using less platinum-group metal. Chemistry World reported Mazda’s claimed reduction of 70–90% in precious-metal use, but that was a claim at the time—not a current, independently confirmed result or proof that the design reached production.

What a catalytic converter does

Automotive catalytic converters use precious metals including platinum, rhodium and palladium to promote reactions that reduce pollutants in engine exhaust. The metals help address nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Because these metals are valuable, a design that could deliver catalytic activity with less of them offered a potential cost benefit.

How the reported nano-catalyst was supposed to work

In Ned Stafford’s 2007 report for Chemistry World, Mazda described precious-metal particles less than five nanometres across, fixed in ceramic spheres. The idea was to keep the tiny particles from moving together when exposed to exhaust heat, preserving more exposed metal surface for the catalyst reactions.

Why particles can agglomerate

According to the report, exhaust heat can cause catalyst particles to migrate and agglomerate—that is, gather into larger clusters. Clustering reduces the amount of metal surface exposed to exhaust gases and can lower catalyst efficiency. Keeping particles apart was therefore central to the proposed design.

Mazda did not disclose how it fixed the particles in the ceramic material. The 2007 account establishes the broad concept, not a detailed manufacturing process.

What Mazda and Nissan claimed

Company Reported approach Precious-metal reduction claimed in the 2007 report Reported status
Mazda Particles under five nanometres across, fixed in ceramic spheres 70–90%, as Mazda claimed, according to Chemistry World in 2007 The report did not name a first vehicle or establish production adoption.
Nissan The report gives fewer technical details than it does for Mazda 50%, as Nissan claimed, according to Chemistry World in 2007 The report described planned use in a vehicle in late 2008 or early 2009; it did not confirm that launch.

These percentages are historical company claims reported by Chemistry World, not independently confirmed test results in the article. They should not be treated as directly comparable measured outcomes: the report does not provide a common test method or enough detail to establish an apples-to-apples comparison.

Did Mazda’s nano-catalyst go into production?

The 2007 report does not establish that it did. Mazda had not identified the first vehicle expected to use the design, and the article records an announcement rather than later production or sales evidence. It therefore cannot establish whether the technology was commercialized or which vehicles, if any, used it.

Fraunhofer IKTS deputy director Michael Zins said of the reported approach, “I am sure all other companies are working on the technology.” That was Zins’s expectation in 2007, not evidence that automakers subsequently adopted the design.

Why reducing precious-metal use mattered

The main expected advantage described in the report was lower cost from using less valuable platinum-group metal. Stafford’s article also mentioned possible health implications from platinum-group metals emitted into the environment. That context is not evidence that Mazda’s proposed nano-catalyst improved health outcomes.

What the announcement does—and does not—tell drivers

The article is a record of a historical technology announcement, not a parts specification. It identifies no compatible vehicle, purchasable nano-catalyst or installation product. It cannot be used to select a replacement converter for a particular car.
