Can a Colour-Changing Polymer Diagnose a Concussion? What the 2015 Research Shows

A 2015 polymer study demonstrated persistent colour changes under force, offering a possible impact-indicator concept. It did not validate a concussion diagnostic or helmet sensor.

A 2015 study demonstrated a power-free polymer material that can retain a colour change after force is applied. That makes it an experimental impact-recording concept—not a concussion diagnostic: the published evidence does not show that it was tested in people, integrated into a helmet, or able to predict an individual brain injury.

What the colour-changing material does

Researchers made a porous polymer structure called an inverse opal. They infiltrated a self-assembled crystal of silica particles with uncrosslinked SU-8, a thermoplastic photoresist, then removed the silica template. The remaining polymer has a repeating pore structure that reflects visible light as structural colour.

When compressed, the pores deform and the wavelengths the structure reflects—the optical stopband—shift. Because the SU-8 deforms elastoplastically, the structure does not simply spring back when the force is removed. Its changed colour can remain as a record that a load occurred, without a power source. The researchers reported this work in “Elastoplastic Inverse Opals as Power-Free Mechanochromic Sensors for Force Recording,” published in Advanced Functional Materials in 2015 (doi:10.1002/adfm.201502774).

What the laboratory measurements found

Cho and colleagues reported a mechanical sensing range of 17.6–20.4 MPa and a maximum stopband-shift-to-strain sensitivity of 5.7 nanometres per percent strain. These are measurements of the material’s response in laboratory tests, not concussion thresholds or clinical measures of sensitivity.

In a separate reported test, an inverse opal with a pristine stopband at 320 nm shifted to 570, 500 and 440 nm under applied normal forces of 30, 60 and 90 mN, respectively. The researchers associated those optical shifts with pore-size changes observed by microscopy. The force values in millinewtons and the sensing range in megapascals describe different test quantities; they should not be treated as interchangeable readings or as injury-severity values. The study’s abstract and release are available through EurekAlert.

How it compares with reversible mechanochromic gels

The 2015 paper contrasted the inverse opal with reversible mechanochromic photonic gels. Its comparison concerns material response, not medical devices:

Material Reported response range What happens after unloading
Elastoplastic inverse opal 17.6–20.4 MPa, as reported by Cho and colleagues in 2015 Deformation and colour change can persist, recording that force was applied
Reversible mechanochromic photonic gels Typically 10–100 kPa, as characterized in the 2015 paper Structure and colour recover after unloading, according to the paper

Because one response is persistent and the other recovers, the materials serve different recording purposes. The ranges alone do not establish which material would be suitable for head protection or injury detection.

Why it is not a concussion diagnosis

A lasting colour shift could potentially alert someone that a force was recorded. It does not, by itself, establish that a concussion occurred, show how severe an injury is, or determine whether someone can safely return to play or duty. The sources describing the 2015 work do not document human testing, clinical validation, regulatory clearance, or a commercial helmet sensor.

Penn described incorporating the material into protective headgear as a future goal. Shu Yang, a professor in Penn’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, told Penn Today on 28 September 2015: “If the force was large enough, and you could see that as easy as reading a litmus test, then you could immediately seek medical attention.” That quote describes the intended use of a visible indicator; it is not evidence that the material can diagnose concussion. The university’s account is at Penn Today. Chemistry World also covered the proposed application in 2015: “Colour-changing polymer tackles concussion diagnosis head on”.

What the research supports

  • The material is a porous SU-8 inverse opal whose structural colour changes as its pores deform under force.
  • Its elastoplastic behaviour can leave a persistent colour shift, allowing a specimen to record that a load was applied without power.
  • The reported optical and mechanical responses are laboratory material findings, not a validated method for identifying or grading brain injuries.
  • Helmet use was proposed as a possible future application; the cited sources do not establish an available product or clinical device.
