Choose Low or Ultra-low only when shorter delay matters more than buffering headroom; neither supports 4K.
Which latency setting should a 24/7 channel use?
Use YouTube’s Normal setting for a continuous feed that does not depend on real-time audience interaction. It gives the player more buffer room, which helps reduce buffering, and supports all resolutions and live features. YouTube does not state a numeric latency target for Normal on its latency help page.

Use a shorter-latency mode only when viewers need to respond or talk with the channel in near-real time. Shorter latency means less read-ahead buffer and greater sensitivity to problems between the encoder and the player. Even if average bitrate appears sustainable, network congestion can still cause delay.

The latency figures are YouTube’s published guidance, not a guaranteed delay for every viewer. Actual playback can vary with the connection and player conditions.

Set latency in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the stream.
- Open the stream dashboard and select Stream Settings.
- Under Stream latency, choose Normal for an unattended or otherwise non-interactive 24/7 feed. Select Low or Ultra-low only if the channel’s interaction needs justify the additional buffering risk.
- Check the YouTube player after the stream starts, particularly if you changed modes or the source network is unstable.
YouTube webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not offer a selectable latency setting. The mode choices above apply when the stream setup exposes the latency control.
How Castr fits into YouTube latency
Castr’s latency choices and YouTube’s destination setting control different playback paths. Set latency for people watching the YouTube destination in YouTube Studio. Castr’s LL and ULL labels describe Castr playback, not a way to force YouTube into those modes.

Configure Castr as the source and YouTube as a destination
- In Castr, create or open the livestream and select an ingest region near the broadcast source.
- Configure the incoming stream using a supported method such as RTMP/RTMPS or SRT.
- Add YouTube as a destination using Castr’s YouTube API connection or YouTube server and stream key. Castr’s YouTube connection guide covers connecting the destination.
- Set the YouTube audience’s latency in the YouTube Live Control Room. If you also use Castr’s player or embed, choose its playback mode separately and verify the account’s plan eligibility.
Castr’s low-latency guide gives its LL playback as under 15 seconds and ULL as under two seconds. Its Sub-Second Streaming documentation says sub-second playback is available only through the Castr player; social destinations use standard latency. These are Castr’s published service descriptions, not independent measurements or YouTube latency targets.
Castr’s January 2026 low-latency guide says LL is available to Ultra and Premium-yearly subscribers. Check current plan eligibility in your account before promising LL or ULL playback to viewers; availability is plan-dependent.

What 24/7 operation requires
Castr says it supports unlimited stream duration while the subscription remains active and has sufficient streaming bandwidth. That is not a promise that delivery will be uninterrupted under every failure condition. A continuous broadcast still depends on the source encoder, power, network connection, and account and bandwidth continuity.
- Use wired Ethernet for the encoder where practical. Castr recommends it because Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes. A cable may improve the local link, but it does not select YouTube’s latency mode or guarantee an end-to-end delay.
- Monitor stream health in Castr’s dashboard and check the YouTube player as well; an ingest indicator alone does not establish the viewer’s playback experience.
- Keep the YouTube mode aligned with the content: Normal for a feed people watch, shorter modes only when interaction is central.

Troubleshoot delay and buffering
Viewers report buffering
- Likely issue: The stream is using Low or Ultra-low, which has less read-ahead buffer. Fix: Switch the YouTube stream to Normal if real-time interaction is not essential.
- Likely issue: Packet loss or latency spikes on the encoder’s Wi-Fi link. Fix: Test a wired Ethernet connection and inspect stream-health information.
YouTube is delayed despite Castr ULL
Castr ULL concerns Castr playback; it does not set the YouTube destination’s latency. Choose the desired mode in YouTube Studio. If the near-real-time audience is watching Castr’s player instead, configure that player separately and confirm plan availability.

Ultra-low has less buffer headroom and is more sensitive to issues between encoder and player. If buffering appears, return to Normal for a non-interactive feed or try Low if some interaction is needed and the loss of 4K support is acceptable.

A 24/7 stream stops
Check the encoder, power, network, account status, and available streaming bandwidth. Castr’s duration guidance is conditional on an active subscription and sufficient bandwidth, so a latency setting alone cannot keep a failed source or exhausted service allowance running.
