Castr YouTube Stream Bitrate and Resolution Settings for 24/7 Playback

Use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate recommendations for Castr output, then plan bandwidth headroom, monitoring, recovery, and independent recording for 24/7 playback.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a YouTube stream sent through Castr, set the encoder or Castr’s YouTube-bound output to YouTube’s current recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate—not to a generic bitrate chart. For H.264, that means 17 Mbps at 1080p60, 14 Mbps at 1080p30, and 8 Mbps at either 720p30 or 720p60. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where supported. A 24/7 stream also needs upload headroom, a recovery plan, and a separate recording strategy: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured.

Which bitrate should you use for YouTube through Castr?

Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the video codec, resolution, and frame rate being delivered to YouTube. The values below are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or universal settings for every encoder. Choose a mode your encoder and sustained upload connection can maintain reliably.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 recommended bitrate for YouTube ingest
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps
2160p30 42 Mbps
2160p60 50 Mbps

These H.264 targets come from YouTube’s live encoder settings; the page’s current recommendations were checked in 2026. That page also lists separate minimum and recommended rates for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs; check the row for the codec you actually send.

Pick resolution and frame rate for the content

Resolution and frame rate solve different problems. Higher resolution preserves more spatial detail; a higher frame rate makes motion look smoother. For mostly static material, 30 fps may be a reasonable choice; fast motion can benefit from 60 fps if the source, encoder, and connection support it. If the source is only 720p, sending a higher output resolution does not create genuine source detail.

  • CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.

Set the output to match what the encoder and connection can sustain for the full run, not merely what a short speed test or a brief test stream can reach. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health while streaming.

Keep the Castr-to-YouTube settings separate from the encoder-to-Castr settings

With Castr in the middle, there can be two distinct stream legs: your encoder sends an input to Castr, and Castr then sends an output to YouTube. The bitrate table above is for the YouTube ingest leg. It does not automatically define the bitrate your encoder must use when sending to Castr.

Castr’s LiveAPI streaming guidelines give general ingest guidance, including H.264, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, 128 Kbps preferred audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval. They also provide resolution-specific ranges for that Castr input and point users onward to destination-specific guidance. Follow Castr’s applicable input requirements on the encoder-to-Castr leg, then use YouTube’s destination requirements for the Castr-to-YouTube output. Avoid combining the two legs’ bitrate figures as if they were one setting.

Blackmagic Design Streaming Encoder HD (BM-BDLKWEB/C/SEDHD)
  • H.264
  • H.265 Stream
  • 1080p 60fps
  • 12G-SDI In/Loop Out

There is a notable difference between sources: Castr’s bitrate article lists 12 Mbps for H.264 1080p60, while YouTube’s current official recommendation is 17 Mbps. The sources do not explain the difference. For a YouTube-bound H.264 output, use YouTube’s current value as the destination target.

Set the other YouTube encoder options

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS is supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to and through Google’s servers.
  • Video codec: YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Select the corresponding bitrate recommendation for the codec used.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube specifies a maximum of 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s specification allows up to 60 fps.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 is supported. YouTube lists stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.

Exact control names vary by encoder and Castr workflow. If a setting is configured in Castr’s output rather than in your local encoder, apply the YouTube-specific value at the output stage.

Calculate upload capacity with headroom

The stream’s target bitrate is not the same as the upload capacity you should provision. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom and says to account for both primary and backup stream bandwidth, plus that headroom. Measure sustained upload speed rather than download speed; consider other devices and services sharing the connection, as well as time-of-day variation.

  • DCI 4K Streaming up to 60 fps
  • SDI & HDMI Monitor Outputs
  • USB-C for Phone Tethering & Webcam Out
  • Front Panel Buttons & Spin Knob

For example, a single H.264 1080p60 YouTube output targets 17 Mbps. With the recommended 20% margin, the connection needs to sustain at least 20.4 Mbps for that stream alone, before accounting for other network use. If a separate backup feed runs simultaneously, include its bandwidth too. This is a planning calculation based on YouTube’s 20% recommendation, not a guarantee against congestion or outages.

YouTube’s guidance is to “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See its streaming tips for network planning details.

Plan recording, monitoring, and recovery for a 24/7 stream

Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a continuous stream

YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also cautions, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A 24/7 channel should therefore use a separate local or otherwise independent recording plan if preserving the program matters. Check that recording files are actually growing; a stream being live does not prove an archive is being written.

Details are in YouTube’s archive live streams guidance. The 12-hour statement is an archive caveat, not a suggested duration for restarting a stream.

Test before depending on the stream

YouTube’s operations guidance recommends advance setup and testing, continuous quality monitoring, checking local archive files, and testing backup-encoder failover. Its advice to arrange an encoder at least two hours ahead and start it at least 15 minutes before an event is event-preparation guidance, not a special prerequisite for a continuous stream. For a 24/7 setup, the useful lesson is to test the whole chain, including output, audio, recording, and recovery, before treating it as unattended.

Choose a recovery path that matches the failure

Castr documents two backup approaches: an encoder-level mode in which a second encoder can take over, and a file-level mode in which backup VOD can play if the live input drops. It also describes adaptive bitrate and customizable rendition controls. Consult Castr’s backup streaming documentation for current behavior. The cited help information does not establish availability for every plan or account, so confirm access in your own Castr account before relying on a feature.

A backup encoder can address an encoder failure, while a backup file can help cover a lost live input; neither removes the need to monitor stream health or consider internet and service interruptions. Test the fallback path rather than assuming it will activate as expected.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and playback problems

  • Stream health is poor or viewers see buffering: Compare the actual output bitrate with the connection’s sustained upload capacity. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a setting the line can maintain, and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. Check whether other traffic is consuming upload capacity.
  • The picture is less detailed than expected: Confirm the output resolution and frame rate at the YouTube-bound leg, then verify the source itself has that detail. Upscaling a lower-resolution source will not restore missing detail.
  • Encoder and platform settings appear to disagree: Identify which leg each value describes. Use Castr’s input guidance for the encoder-to-Castr connection and YouTube’s codec-specific table for the YouTube output.
  • Keyframe or connection warnings appear: Verify CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (never above 4 seconds), and RTMPS where supported. Check the selected codec and its matching YouTube bitrate recommendation.
  • The live stream ends or the input drops: Check the encoder, network connection, and Castr-to-YouTube path separately. If using Castr backup, confirm the selected mode and test the takeover or file fallback.
  • No complete archive is available afterward: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use an independent recording plan and check that local recordings are growing during operation.
