How to Schedule a YouTube Stream Playlist to Skip Videos Already Played

Short answer: YouTube does not document a native way to schedule a livestream from a playlist and automatically skip videos that have already aired. Its playlist Loop control repeats videos for viewers, while Live Control Room schedules a livestream event; neither is a stateful playlist scheduler. To avoid repeats, you need to manage the video sequence yourself or use a service that confirms it supports playback history and skip rules.

First, distinguish a YouTube playlist from a livestream playlist

A YouTube watch playlist is a list of videos a viewer can play on YouTube. YouTube’s documented Loop control repeats that watch playlist: open a video in the playlist, expand the playlist, and click Loop. The instructions do not describe a schedule, a record of which items have aired, or an option to skip previously played videos. YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists

A scheduled livestream is a separate event in Live Control Room. You can schedule the event and connect an encoder, but YouTube’s documented workflow does not turn a watch playlist into a livestream source or track which playlist videos have already aired. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” They let an encoder send its feed to the right stream; they do not control which source video plays next. YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings

Schedule a YouTube livestream with an encoder

If you need a scheduled event rather than automatic playlist history, use YouTube’s documented encoder workflow. This schedules the event, not a sequence of videos that skips previously aired items.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select Manage, then choose Schedule stream.
  2. Set up the event details and scheduling options in Live Control Room.
  3. Connect your encoder using the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  4. When the scheduled time arrives, start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room.
  5. When ready, click Go live in Live Control Room.

These steps start an encoder-supplied feed. If that feed contains prerecorded videos, the order and repeat behavior depend on the encoder or playback service you use—not on YouTube’s watch-playlist Loop control.

How to prevent a video from repeating

Because YouTube does not document automatic “skip already played” behavior for scheduled livestream playlists, choose a workflow that matches the source and schedule you need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For a one-time lineup: prepare the intended sequence in your playback or encoding software and remove items that should not run again. Confirm whether the software remembers playback position or history after a restart.
  • For recurring programming: look for an explicit history, “play once,” or skip-if-played setting. Sequential playback and looping are not the same as remembering which items aired in a previous run.
  • For uploaded video files scheduled or looped in the cloud: Castr documents uploading MP4 files, arranging a playlist, and choosing Loop or a scheduled Date & Time, with YouTube among its destinations. Its documentation also describes TV Playout for uploaded video and livestream content. This establishes scheduled or repeating file-based broadcasts, not automatic skipping based on prior playback in a YouTube playlist. Check directly with the provider before relying on a specific history rule. Castr: Schedule or loop videos to live stream Castr: TV Playout
  • For continuous prerecorded live streams: Gyre advertises arranging prerecorded videos into a looping YouTube livestream playlist and scheduling continuous streams. That description supports looping and scheduling, not the requested skip-already-played behavior. Ask the provider to confirm the exact rule before choosing it. Gyre

Questions to ask before choosing a service

  • Are the sources YouTube watch-playlist videos or uploaded/local video files?
  • Do you need a one-time scheduled event, a recurring schedule, or a stream that stays live continuously?
  • Must the playback run in the cloud, or can a computer and encoder remain on for the full broadcast?
  • Does the service explicitly record which files have played and skip them on the next run? Ask for confirmation of this exact behavior; a “playlist,” “loop,” or “schedule” label alone does not establish it.

What YouTube DVR does—and does not do

Live DVR is a viewer control. It can let viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, but it does not affect the broadcaster’s source playlist or schedule. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams

Troubleshooting playlist repeats and scheduled streams

  • The watch playlist repeats: check whether Loop is enabled on the playlist. That control is for playlist playback, not a livestream schedule. Turn it off for ordinary watch-page playback if you do not want the list to repeat.
  • The scheduled event exists but has no video: a scheduled event does not itself supply a feed. Connect and start the encoder, then wait for the preview before going live.
  • The stream starts with the wrong sequence: verify the playlist or file order in the software supplying the feed. YouTube’s scheduled-event controls do not document selection of videos from a watch playlist.
  • A video plays again after a restart: confirm whether your playback service persists history across restarts. If it does not explicitly promise skip-if-played behavior, assume a loop or restart may replay items.
  • Viewers report difficulty rewinding: DVR is a viewer feature and can be limited on very long streams; it cannot be used to change the source sequence.

Copyright and monetization checks

Before broadcasting prerecorded material, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for both the video and its audio. A stream key only authorizes the encoder connection; it does not grant copyright permission. Also review YouTube’s current monetization policies for reused content if earning revenue is part of your plan: permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Do not treat a technical ability to loop or schedule a file as clearance to broadcast it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your actual goal is keeping prerecorded videos live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not provide a documented guarantee here that already-played items will be skipped. Confirm that distinction if avoiding repeats is essential.
