Mike Flanagan’s new adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel Carrie presents Carrie White and her mother, Margaret, as a pair who love each other—even as Margaret’s fundamentalist beliefs and harmful actions damage their relationship. That tension, rather than any claim that their bond is healthy, is the distinctive angle Samantha Sloyan says Flanagan asked her to explore.
Who plays Carrie and Margaret in the new adaptation?
Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, and Samantha Sloyan plays her mother, Margaret White, in Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel. The series has eight episodes. GamesRadar+ reported that all eight would arrive on Prime Video on October 7, 2026; availability can vary by region, so check the local Prime Video catalog for current viewing information.

How does this version frame their relationship?
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Sloyan recalled Flanagan telling her, “this isn’t the Margaret White that you recognize. They love each other.” The direction shifts the emphasis toward mutual affection, but does not erase the damage Margaret causes: her beliefs and behavior still interfere with the relationship and create distance between mother and daughter.

Love is part of the adaptation’s dramatic framing; it is not evidence that the relationship is safe or that Margaret’s conduct is excused. The interview describes a more human and dimensional portrayal, not a measurable comparison proving this version is unlike every earlier one.

Why did Summer H. Howell want to play Carrie?
Howell told GamesRadar+ she had not really heard of Carrie before taking on the project, despite working in horror since childhood. Reading Flanagan’s scripts—and seeing “the humanity that Mike writes into these characters”—made her want to play the role. That is Howell’s explanation for connecting with this interpretation, rather than a claim that it is objectively better than previous adaptations.
What did the eight-episode format add for Margaret?
Sloyan said the longer format gave her more room to explore Margaret. She also described her real-life connection with Howell as a factor that deepened how the performers portrayed the characters’ connection. The interview presents those elements as part of the actors’ approach; it does not establish how the series compares with other versions through a broader study.
