The Carrera Subway-E 2 is the more compelling fit if you want wider tyres, a larger battery and a stable-feeling bike for rougher streets or mixed paths, and you do not expect to carry it often. The Boardman HYB 8.9e is the stronger option if low weight, a road-oriented hybrid setup and a Fazua mid-drive matter most. The available specifications do not establish a current like-for-like price or a controlled head-to-head result, so choose by your route and carrying needs, then check the exact listing and ride the right size before buying.
At a glance: how the two bikes differ
These are both flat-bar commuter-style e-bikes, but they make different trade-offs. The Carrera pairs a rear-hub motor with wider 27.5-inch tyres and a 378 Wh battery. The Boardman uses a Fazua mid-drive, narrower 700c tyres, a carbon fork and a smaller 250 Wh battery. The most consequential practical gap in the published figures is weight: T3 lists the Carrera at 21.4 kg with its battery, while Halfords Ireland gives an approximate 15.5 kg for the Boardman HYB 8.9E.

The weight figures come from different published sources, and the Boardman figure is approximate. The available information does not confirm that both weights use the same method or correspond to directly comparable frame sizes. Treat the gap as a strong reason to investigate portability, not as a laboratory-controlled comparison.

Choose around the awkward part of your routine
If your commute involves stairs, a train platform, a narrow hallway or lifting a bike onto a car rack, weight may matter more than motor torque or advertised range. On the figures above, the Boardman is substantially lighter. That can make everyday handling less demanding, although you should lift the actual bike in your chosen size before deciding: balance, handlebar width and how you grip it also affect whether a bike feels manageable.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The Carrera’s listed 21.4 kg includes its battery. T3’s reviewer specifically found it heavy to lift and carry. That is a practical drawback for an upstairs flat or a storage area reached by steps, even if the bike rides comfortably once rolling. If you can leave it securely at ground level and rarely need to lift it, the disadvantage may be less important.
Check the whole storage and charging setup
Both bikes have removable batteries according to their published specifications, which gives you the option of taking the battery indoors to charge rather than carrying the complete bike to a socket. Confirm the removal process and charging arrangements for the precise model year you are considering. Measure doorways, storage space and any rack you plan to use; do not assume that a removable battery makes a heavy bicycle easy to carry.
Think about where the bike will spend the working day as well as where it sleeps. A secure ground-floor store may change the decision; a daily flight of stairs may settle it. If you expect to carry the bike frequently, try lifting both candidates rather than relying on the catalogue number alone.
Which motor will suit your commute?
Rear hub on the Carrera
The Subway-E 2 uses a 250 W BAFANG G020 rear-hub motor with stated torque of 45 Nm, as reported by T3. A rear-hub layout drives the rear wheel; the specification alone does not establish how natural or powerful the assistance will feel to you. The bike also has a torque sensor and five assistance modes, giving you several settings to try as effort and conditions change.

T3’s reviewer described the Carrera as stable and confidence-inspiring in town and on uneven ground. The account includes a climb averaging about 10%, where the bike maintained useful assistance, particularly in Boost mode. That is one reviewer’s ride experience, not a controlled comparison with the Boardman or a guarantee that the same hill will feel easy for every rider. Your result will depend on your own effort, route, load and chosen assistance.
Mid-drive on the Boardman
The Boardman HYB 8.9e uses the Fazua Evation mid-drive system. Boardman specifies 250 W and 60 Nm and says the system provides assistance as the rider pedals. Those figures describe the manufacturer’s system; they do not prove that the Boardman will feel better on your route. Motor placement is one part of the ride, and the supplied information contains no same-rider, same-route comparison that would settle the question.
Try each bike on the kind of start, slope and stop-start traffic you encounter. Pay attention to how assistance begins and fades, whether the settings feel useful at your normal cadence, and whether the bike remains comfortable when you are riding without much assistance. An advertised torque figure is not a substitute for testing fit and feel.
How should you compare the range claims?
Do not treat the published range figures as comparable test results. T3 reports a 25–40-mile stated range for the Carrera. Boardman claims up to 56 miles in Breeze mode, while Halfords Ireland describes the HYB 8.9E as averaging 25–30 miles and reaching up to 60 miles in ideal conditions. The statements use different wording and may rely on different assumptions. None establishes the distance either bike will cover on your particular commute.

Start with your real round trip
Work out the distance you actually need between charges, including detours and any planned errands. Then account for the factors Halfords identifies as affecting range: terrain, assistance level, rider weight and weather. Frequent steep climbs, stronger assistance or adverse conditions can make a maximum-range figure a poor planning target. A long advertised maximum is not evidence of a guaranteed reserve for every rider.
The battery capacities also differ: the Carrera is listed at 378 Wh and the Boardman at 250 Wh. Capacity is useful context, but it does not convert directly into a reliable mileage comparison across different bikes, motors, settings and riders. If your commute is close to the range you need, ask the seller how the estimate was produced, check the exact bike’s documentation, and plan around a conservative usable distance rather than the most optimistic claim.
Consider charging as part of the commute
Both listings describe removable batteries. That may help if you can charge at work, but it is useful only if your workplace permits charging and you can store the battery safely. Halfords Ireland lists a three-hour charge time for the Boardman HYB 8.9E; treat that as a retailer specification for that listing, not as a universal figure for every model year or market. No comparable Carrera charge-time figure is published in the available specifications.

Carrera: more tyre width and a mixed-surface emphasis
The Carrera’s 27.5 × 1.95-inch tyres are wider than the Boardman’s listed 35 mm tyres. T3 describes the Subway-E 2 as planted over rough surfaces and suitable for commuting and gravel. That makes it the more natural candidate if your regular route includes broken pavement, towpaths or maintained gravel paths, provided those surfaces are appropriate for a hybrid bike. It has a rigid high-tensile steel fork rather than suspension, so do not read “mixed-surface” as meaning it is built for technical trails.

Boardman: a road-oriented hybrid setup
The HYB 8.9e pairs 700c wheels and 35 mm Schwalbe Citizen tyres with a full carbon rigid fork. Boardman and Halfords describe the tyres as puncture-protected. This is a road-oriented hybrid configuration that may suit a commute dominated by paved roads and cycleways. Puncture protection is not a promise that punctures cannot happen, and the narrower listed tyre does not by itself establish how comfortable the bike will feel on your roads.
For either model, think about the surface you ride every day rather than the most adventurous route you might take once. Try the bike over a representative stretch and check handling, tyre clearance and comfort with the load you expect to carry. Neither product description is evidence for off-road performance beyond the uses stated above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What equipment will you need for commuting?
Do not assume that practical mounting points mean accessories are included. Halfords Ireland says the Boardman has mudguard and pannier mounts, but that its listing does not include a pannier rack as standard. Check the exact live listing for both bikes to establish whether mudguards, a rack, lights or other equipment are supplied. The specifications here do not establish that those items come with either model.

Make an all-in budget around the way you commute. A rack and panniers can be useful for work clothes or groceries; a backpack may be simpler if you do not need much capacity. Mudguards matter if you ride in wet conditions, and lights should be appropriate for when and where you ride. A secure lock is a separate purchase to consider: T3 notes that the Carrera has no GPS tracking, but tracking is not a substitute for physical security. No particular lock is specified here.

Which one offers better value?
T3 reported a Carrera Subway-E 2 price of £1,299 in its review published on 9 October 2026. That is a dated review price, not a guarantee of today’s price or stock. The available information does not establish a current Boardman UK price, so it cannot support a fair present-day value verdict based on purchase price alone.
Compare the current all-in costs rather than headline prices. Check the exact frame size and model year, the retailer’s assembly terms, any required rack or mudguards, a lock, and fit adjustments. Also verify the warranty and what the listing actually includes. A cheaper bike can cost more to make commute-ready if the necessary equipment is extra; a higher-priced listing is not automatically better value if its included items do not match your needs.
The evidence supports a use-case distinction rather than an unconditional winner: the Carrera is the apparent value choice based on its reported review price and its wider-tyre, larger-battery setup, while the Boardman’s strongest case is its lower listed weight and mid-drive configuration. Recheck live prices and availability before treating either as the better deal.

- Write down your route. Note round-trip distance, steep sections, rough or unpaved sections, likely weather exposure and how much assistance you expect to use.
- Identify every lift or storage constraint. Include stairs, doorways, public transport, car racks and the place where you will charge or store the bike.
- Find the exact listings. Check that the name is Carrera Subway-E 2 or Boardman HYB 8.9e, then verify model year, size, specification, price, stock, warranty and included accessories.
- Check fit, not just frame labels. Compare the available sizes and arrange a test ride. Halfords says test rides can be booked at participating stores; confirm that the relevant store has a suitable test bike and size available.
- Ride a representative route if possible. Try starts, stops, a climb and the roughest surface you regularly use. Compare comfort, handling and assistance at settings you would actually use.
- Calculate the all-in cost. Add any rack, panniers, mudguards, lights, lock, assembly or fit work you need, based on the exact listing.
- Choose for your constraint, not the biggest number. If carrying is routine, prioritize the lighter complete bike. If your route and storage suit the heavier option, judge its tyre setup, battery and price in the context of your own journey.
Make sure you have the right Boardman model
Boardman model names are easy to mix up. This comparison concerns the HYB 8.9e, sometimes styled HYB 8.9E in retailer listings. It is not the MTX-E 8.9, which has a different Shimano EP6 motor and 504 Wh battery, and it is not the non-electric HYB 8.9. Do not transfer specifications between those bikes. When comparing listings or speaking to a seller, confirm the complete model name, electric system, model year and frame size on the specific bicycle.
Verdict: match the bike to the hardest part of your commute
Pick the Carrera Subway-E 2 if wider tyres, a larger published battery capacity, mixed-path suitability and the reported £1,299 review price align with your needs—and you will not have to carry it regularly. Consider the Boardman HYB 8.9e if its lower approximate listed weight, 700c road-oriented setup and Fazua mid-drive appeal more, and you can confirm a price that works for you. Neither set of range claims guarantees your commute distance. A test ride, correct size and current listing check matter more than declaring a winner from specifications alone.
