The pedestrian-focused mapping program is now in a limited pilot serving hundreds of families near 14 Fairfax County public schools, with the district’s Safe Routes to School team helping refine it.
The pilot is not proof that SafeWalkr prevents crashes or produces safer outcomes. It is an early effort to help families see which streets have sidewalks and make more informed choices about walking routes to school.

Why the students built SafeWalkr
Daniil Prokofev, Isaac Leetyn and Ashwath Muppa, seniors at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, started SafeWalkr after Prokofev’s roughly eight-mile run home from school took him onto a busy road without sidewalks. The route had come from Google Maps, according to The Washington Post’s October 12, 2026, report.

The students began the project at their school’s 24-hour hackathon in March and spent seven months refining it. They used Python, JavaScript and C++ to build an algorithm intended to weigh safety alongside speed. Prokofev described the aim as filling a gap rather than replacing a general-purpose map: “We are not re-creating Google Maps,” he said. “We’re trying to push the bounds of what kind of mapping software exists.”

How SafeWalkr is intended to help pedestrians
As described by the students in The Washington Post report, SafeWalkr draws on Fairfax County records, Google Maps imagery and street databases. It is designed to show which streets have sidewalks, map crosswalks and traffic volumes, and recommend which side of a road to walk on. Those features are reported descriptions, not independently audited technical specifications.
For a family choosing a route, the difference is practical: a route that is short on a map may still involve a stretch without a sidewalk or a difficult crossing. SafeWalkr is intended to make such pedestrian details more visible while balancing safety and travel time. The available reporting does not establish how frequently its underlying data are updated, how accurately its recommendations reflect conditions on the ground, or how it handles every street or crossing.
Who is using it in the pilot
The pilot launched in the week before the October 12, 2026, report and is intended for hundreds of families living within walking distance of 14 Fairfax County public schools. Fairfax County Public Schools’ Safe Routes to School team had been working on static safe-route maps and collaborated with the students to refine the program for local families.

- Real-time location tracking lets you check in on your child’s whereabouts through the Garmin Jr. app on your compatible smartphone and even receive notifications when your child enters or leaves parent-defined boundaries (active subscription and LTE connectivity required)
- For added peace of mind, the Assistance feature lets your child quickly trigger a message with their live location to their family contacts (requires setup and your child to be in an area with network coverage where data connectivity is available)
The student creators attend a magnet school and live too far away to walk there themselves. Isaac Leetyn said students should be able to focus on school and having fun, rather than worrying about being struck by a vehicle on the way to school.
What comes next—and what remains unconfirmed
Prokofev said the students hope to expand SafeWalkr to all 200 Fairfax County schools and potentially other counties, depending on how the pilot goes. That is an aspiration, not a confirmed districtwide rollout, implementation schedule or county commitment. The pilot’s results will matter to any decision about expanding access.
The October 2026 report does not provide a public URL for the program, its price or licensing model, a privacy policy, or whether its code is open source. Families outside the pilot should not assume the service is available to them.

Why the school-walking problem matters
SafeWalkr’s launch comes amid broader concerns about pedestrian safety, but national statistics do not measure the program’s effect. Smart Growth America’s 2026 Dangerous by Design report says 7,080 people were struck and killed while walking in the United States in 2024—more than 19 a day—and that the 2024 toll was 72% higher than in 2009. Heidi Simon, a co-author of the report, told The Washington Post: “The country is still very much in a pedestrian safety crisis, and we are not doing enough to get ourselves out of it.” She added, “When you are designing a road for speed, you are not designing a road for safety.”

The Federal Highway Administration’s March 2019 brief using 2017 National Household Travel Survey data found that 10.4% of U.S. children ages 5–17 usually walked or biked to school; 54.2% were usually driven in a private vehicle, and 33.2% took a school bus. Among children living within a quarter mile of school, 80.9% usually walked. Among those living at least two miles away, fewer than 1% did.
The Washington Post also cited a historical estimate that about 48% of U.S. K–8 students usually walked or biked to school in 1969, attributed to a National Center for Safe Routes to School report. That figure and the 2017 FHWA statistic cover different populations and come from different sources and methods, so they should not be read as a precise like-for-like measure of change.

What is known about SafeWalkr’s effectiveness
The available reporting describes SafeWalkr’s intended data inputs and features, but does not provide an independent accuracy study, a crash evaluation or user outcome data. There is therefore no established evidence in the cited reporting that the program prevents crashes, improves safety outcomes or outperforms other route planners.
That distinction matters: a map can surface sidewalk and crossing information, but its usefulness depends on whether those details are accurate and current, and whether families can act on the route it suggests. The pilot creates an opportunity to learn how families use the program; no measured results are reported yet.

Families and schools evaluating pedestrian directions can look beyond the shortest route. Useful questions include:
- Does the route account for continuous sidewalks, marked crossings and traffic exposure?
- Does it specify which side of a road to use where that matters?
- Does it explain how safety considerations are balanced against travel time?
- Are the data sources and update dates disclosed?
- Has the provider published route-accuracy or safety-outcome evaluations?
SafeWalkr is reported to address several of these route-planning considerations, but its measured performance and any like-for-like comparison with other tools are not established in the October 2026 reporting.
