Carbon-aware computing uses information about the carbon intensity of electricity to decide when or where flexible computing work runs—or whether to reduce that work. The aim is to do more when electricity is lower carbon and shift, defer, or scale back optional demand when it is higher carbon, without violating deadlines or service requirements.
What carbon-aware computing means
The Green Software Foundation’s Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) specification defines carbon awareness as software or hardware behavior that changes in response to the carbon intensity of the energy it consumes. In practice, a system can use electricity emissions data to guide workload scheduling or demand.

Carbon intensity describes emissions associated with electricity, commonly expressed as grams of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilowatt-hour (gCO₂e/kWh). It can vary by time and place as the mix of electricity generation changes. A value is meaningful only with its location, time period, data source, and calculation method understood.

The SCI specification distinguishes carbon awareness from energy efficiency and hardware efficiency. Energy efficiency means using less electricity to provide the same function; hardware efficiency means using fewer physical resources for that function. Carbon-aware computing instead responds to the emissions intensity of the electricity being used. These approaches can be combined, but they are not interchangeable. Read the SCI specification.

How carbon-aware computing works
A scheduler or application considers carbon-intensity information alongside operational constraints, then chooses whether to move, delay, or adjust flexible work. The three main levers are:
Shift work to a lower-carbon time
Temporal shifting delays work until a time when the electricity supplying it is expected to have lower carbon intensity. This can suit tasks with a completion window, such as some software updates or batch processing. The scheduler must respect the task’s deadline and any service requirements; urgent or latency-sensitive work may not be deferrable.

Run work in a lower-carbon location
Spatial shifting runs flexible work in another physical location or grid region whose electricity is assessed as lower carbon. The workload must be able to run there, and the comparison needs to use emissions data whose geographic basis is appropriate and consistent. Latency, availability, and other service constraints can limit the viable locations.
Shape demand as grid intensity changes
Demand shaping changes the amount or timing of work rather than simply moving an unchanged workload. For example, a system might pause or reduce optional processing when carbon intensity is high. This can complement time and location shifting, but it changes how much work is performed and should be assessed against the same functional outcome.

What makes a workload a candidate
Carbon-aware scheduling is useful only when there is room to make an operational choice. Before shifting work, teams need to identify which tasks can move and what limits apply.
- Deadline: How late can the task finish without missing its purpose?
- Latency and service quality: Does the work need to run near users or respond immediately?
- Location constraints: Can the workload run in another region while meeting its technical and operational requirements?
- Flexible demand: What portion can be delayed, moved, paused, or reduced?
- Data quality: Are carbon-intensity estimates available for the relevant times and regions, with suitable freshness and coverage?
There is no universal latency or quality threshold that makes a workload carbon-aware. Those limits depend on the application and its service commitments.

How to assess and report emissions impact
A scheduling decision is not proof of an emissions reduction. Teams need a baseline and a transparent method for comparing outcomes. The SCI specification calls for a defined software boundary and functional unit, such as the service or task being assessed, and disclosure of the calculation method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Define the system boundary. Specify which software and supporting components are included.
- Choose a functional unit. State what useful output or service the emissions result represents.
- Select measurement or estimation methods. Explain how energy use and emissions for the included components are obtained.
- Quantify component rates and report the result. Document the data, method, boundary, and relevant assumptions so the comparison can be understood.
The specification describes electricity carbon intensity in gCO₂e/kWh and, for its consequential approach, specifies location-based marginal emissions factors. Carbon-intensity figures based on different methods or boundaries are not automatically comparable. A report should identify which approach it uses rather than presenting a single intensity value as universal.

Do not infer a fixed percentage reduction from the act of shifting work. Any impact depends on the workload, time and geographic coverage of the data, the energy and emissions methods, and the system boundary. Renewable-energy purchasing claims are also not a substitute for the location-based marginal electricity signal described by the SCI method.
A software tool example
The Green Software Foundation’s Carbon Aware SDK offers a Web API and command-line interface for developers building software that considers when or where workloads run. Its documentation describes use cases including choosing lower-carbon times for software updates and selecting cloud regions. The project documentation identifies it as a graduated project and notes that project stage can change; check its current status, configuration, and data-source availability before relying on it. The SDK ecosystem documentation names WattTime and Electricity Maps as carbon-data sources. A tool can supply data and support comparisons, but it does not establish that a particular deployment reduced emissions. See the Carbon Aware SDK documentation.
