“Caramel protein drink” and “protein shake” are not distinct, standardized product types. The practical difference is usually the format: a ready-to-drink product comes pre-mixed, while a powder needs to be prepared. What the names mean
Retail product names use “drink” and “shake” in overlapping ways. The FDA-hosted food-code table lists ready-to-drink nutritional shakes separately from protein or nutritional powder mixes, which supports distinguishing products by format—not by assuming the words “drink” and “shake” signal different nutrition.

Example: a caramel ready-to-drink shake
Premier Protein’s manufacturer page lists its Caramel Protein Shake in an 11.5 fl oz serving with 160 calories, 30 g protein, 1 g total sugars, 0 g added sugars, 350 mg sodium, and 3 g total fat. The manufacturer lists milk protein concentrate and calcium caseinate among its protein sources and identifies milk and soy as allergens. These are label values for that named product, not typical values for caramel drinks or protein shakes generally. The page also includes an 11 fl oz panel, so check the package size and current label when comparing products.
The manufacturer states that the product is “Not a low calorie food.” Its Caramel Protein Shake product page is a useful example of the details to verify, not evidence that one format or brand is better for everyone.

- Choose by convenience: a pre-mixed bottle avoids preparation; powder requires it.
- Compare equivalent servings: use the serving size shown on each package before comparing protein, calories, sugars, sodium, or fat.
- Check ingredients and allergens: confirm the exact product’s disclosures, especially if you avoid particular ingredients.
- Do not treat the name as a nutrition claim: “drink,” “shake,” and “caramel” alone do not establish a health advantage, calorie level, meal-replacement role, or ideal protein amount.
