The account number may identify your account or appear as an account detail; the 2SV number is an enrolled method that receives an extra sign-in code. They can be the same number, but changing one does not necessarily change the other.
What each phone number is for
| Setting | Purpose | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon account phone number | An account detail that may also be used as a sign-in identifier. Amazon says sign-in options depend on how the account was set up; they may include a registered mobile number, email, one-time code, or passkey. Amazon sign-in help | Account details, including the Login & security area. Exact labels can vary. |
| 2SV phone number | An enrolled verification method that receives an additional code by text or voice call during sign-in. An authenticator app is another method Amazon describes. Amazon Two-Step Verification help | Your Account → Login & security → Two-Step Verification settings. |
Amazon describes Two-Step Verification as a feature that adds an extra layer of security to account login. The key distinction is the role: one number may identify or be associated with the account, while an enrolled 2SV method is where the extra code is sent.

Can the same number be used for both?
Yes. A phone number may appear as both an account detail and an enrolled 2SV method. But the settings are separate, so do not assume that changing the account phone number updates the destination for verification codes. Amazon makes this distinction explicit in its Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) account guidance: changing the KDP account phone number does not update the number used for 2SV. That instruction is specifically about KDP; for any Amazon account, check the enrolled methods directly rather than inferring that they changed.

Use the account-detail settings separately when you want to update the phone number associated with the account. The exact account options and sign-in methods depend on how the account was set up.
