If a CaptureKit screenshot is blank, there is no single documented cause or guaranteed fix. First check the HTTP response and API Logs; then verify the URL, API key, capture timing, selected page area, viewport and full-page settings, and resource-blocking options. Change one setting at a time so each test helps isolate the problem.
1. Check the response and API Logs
Start by determining whether CaptureKit returned an API error or successfully produced an image that happens to show no visible content. Record the HTTP status and response body from the capture request. The CaptureKit API reference lists errors including bad requests, invalid API keys, payment-required responses, rate limits and server errors.

Then open API Logs in CaptureKit and compare the request’s status code, duration and credit cost. Those details can help distinguish an account or request problem from an apparently successful capture of an empty page. Follow the observed status rather than treating every blank image as a rendering failure.
- Inactive or expired key: Activate the key or replace it.
- Rate limit: Back off before retrying.
- Payment required: Resolve the billing issue.
- Forbidden: Check the permissions associated with the request.
- Internal error: Retry, and contact CaptureKit support if it continues.
These are the error-handling paths in CaptureKit’s introduction; use the response actually returned to decide which applies.

2. Verify the key and request basics
The screenshot endpoint needs a target URL and an API key in the x-api-key header. Check that the request points to the intended public page and that the key is active. To check authentication separately from screenshot rendering, CaptureKit recommends calling its /v1/usage endpoint with the same key. The quick start covers signup and key setup.
Keep the API key on a backend. Do not expose it in browser-side or mobile application code, where users could retrieve it.
3. Check whether the page is ready when the screenshot is taken
A successful request can still capture an empty-looking page if the target renders its content with JavaScript after the initial document load. CaptureKit offers three separate timing controls: wait_until, delay and wait_for_selector. They affect when capture happens, not what part of the page is selected.

CaptureKit’s rendering guidance also identifies JavaScript execution and lazy-loaded images as considerations when checking whether an output is complete. Test one timing option at a time; do not assume that waiting for network idle or a fixed number of seconds is right for every site.
4. Confirm the selected content and page dimensions
Check both the capture selector and the viewport. CaptureKit’s documented defaults are a 1280 × 1024 viewport and full_page=false. A viewport-only image may omit content below the fold, which can look incomplete if you expected a full-page screenshot. If you use selector, verify that it matches the visible content you intend to capture.

full_page=true. - If the page reveals more content as it scrolls, test
full_page_scroll=trueas a separate option. Its documentedfull_page_scroll_durationdefault is 400 ms. - If the result is blank only at a particular screen size, compare the default viewport with the width and height you need, or try a supported device emulation.
Full-page capture and scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded content are distinct controls, and the documented defaults for both are false. Enable only the behavior your target page needs.

5. Temporarily remove resource filters
Inspect block_resources, block_urls, remove_selectors and ad-removal settings. CaptureKit can block resource types such as scripts, stylesheets, images, XHR and fetch. Blocking one of these can change what the page renders or whether it has visible styling.

- Capture the same URL again without changing other settings.
- If the page appears, restore filters individually to identify which one affects the output.
Keep only filters you actually need; this test identifies whether a capture filter is contributing to the blank or incomplete result.
6. Check what the target site serves to the capture service
Confirm that the URL is reachable by the capture service and consider what the site may show to its requesting environment. A sign-in page, bot check, empty state or region-dependent version can differ from what you see in your own browser. If a proxy option is relevant, it can be tested as another request variable, but CaptureKit’s documentation does not promise that a proxy will solve a particular site restriction.
