To screenshot a page that requires login without repeating the interactive login on every run, save the authenticated Playwright BrowserContext storage state after signing in, then load that state into a fresh context. Navigate to the protected page, verify a site-specific sign-in indicator, and call Page.screenshot. Restoring browser state reuses an authorized session; it does not bypass the site’s access controls.
Save login state, then restore it for the screenshot
The login steps and the signal that proves successful authentication depend on the target website. Replace the example URLs and comments below with that site’s supported login flow and a reliable, application-specific readiness check. The example shows the documented Java API pattern; the placeholder login and readiness steps are not a tested recipe.

}- Sign in normally. Complete the website’s supported login flow in a context and verify that sign-in succeeded before saving state.
- Save the context state.
BrowserContext.storageState(new BrowserContext.StorageStateOptions().setPath(...))writes the state file. Create the parent directory, such asplaywright/.auth, before running if it does not exist. - Create a fresh context with that state. Pass the file path through
Browser.NewContextOptions.setStorageStatePath(...). The restored context is separate from the login context. - Navigate and verify authentication. Wait for an account-specific element or other reliable signal. A completed navigation alone does not show that the user is authenticated.

- Viewport or full page: By default, a page screenshot captures the visible viewport. Set
setFullPage(true)to capture the full scrollable document; the resulting image can be much taller. - One region or element: Use a screenshot clip rectangle for a specific region, or call
Locator.screenshotfor a single element. - File or bytes: Set a path to write the image directly. The screenshot API can also return bytes for post-processing.
- Format and scale: The API supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP, as well as CSS or device scale. Choose based on the artifact you need and its expected dimensions.
- Animation and variable content: Screenshot options support animation handling and locator masks. Mask sensitive or changing regions when appropriate, and document the choice if the image is evidence that needs to be reproducible.

Match storage-state handling to the application
Cookies and local storage
Browser-context storage state can include cookies and local-storage snapshots. That is enough for many applications, but the correct contents depend on where the application stores its authentication data.
IndexedDB, OPFS, and virtual WebAuthn credentials
The Java API documents options for IndexedDB, origin private file system (OPFS), and virtual WebAuthn credentials. If the application stores authentication tokens in IndexedDB, enable the IndexedDB snapshot option when saving state. These capabilities are versioned: IndexedDB support was added in Playwright v1.51, setStorageState in v1.59, virtual credentials in v1.61, and OPFS in v1.63. Check the API documentation for the installed Java version before using them; do not assume a newer option exists in an older project.

Playwright’s standard storage-state API does not persist sessionStorage. If the application depends on it, the Authentication guide demonstrates serializing the relevant values and restoring them with context.addInitScript for the matching domain. This is an app-specific workaround: restore only the values the application needs and verify that the authenticated state is actually recovered.

Protect the saved state and handle expired sessions
Playwright’s Authentication guide warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Treat the file as a credential, not as an ordinary test fixture.
- Add the authentication-state directory to
.gitignore; do not commit state files to a repository. - Store them in a restricted local directory or managed secret location, and use a test account with only the access required.
- Remove stale state according to the site’s account policy and your project’s policy. There is no universal session expiry interval; the website controls whether and when a saved session expires or is revoked.
- Avoid publishing screenshots that reveal account data or secrets. Use a synthetic account, mask sensitive elements, or crop the capture as appropriate.
If a restored session fails, detect a redirect to the login page or the absence of the expected account-specific indicator. Discard the stale state and refresh it through the website’s supported login flow rather than treating navigation as proof of authentication.

Troubleshoot common failures

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same storage-state file for every test account?
No. Save and manage state separately for each account whose authorized session you need to restore, and protect each file as a credential.
Does restoring storage state guarantee that the screenshot will show an authenticated page?
No. The site can expire or revoke the session, and the application may require storage beyond what was restored. Verify an account-specific page indicator before capture.
