Choose the sound and setup before the microphone
Start with the recording you want to make, then check what it takes to connect and record it. Close-up solo speech is a different job from moving sounds across a stereo image or creating a binaural, ear-to-ear effect.

- Simple solo voice at a computer: A USB microphone is often the most straightforward route.
- Object sounds with a left-to-right image: A stereo-capable microphone or a pair of microphones may suit the recording. Stereo is not automatically binaural.
- Binaural roleplay or spatial triggers: Choose a setup built for binaural capture, which uses two omnidirectional microphones.
- Recording away from a computer: A standalone recorder can capture to a memory card and may also accept external microphones.

Stereo and binaural are not the same
Stereo records two channels to create a left-to-right sound image. A microphone offering stereo mode can be useful for spatial recordings, but that mode alone does not make the recording binaural. Binaural capture uses two omnidirectional microphones to create an ear-to-ear perspective. If that specific effect is your goal, confirm that the microphone and recording path are designed for binaural use.

USB or XLR microphone for ASMR?
USB: fewer pieces to connect
A USB microphone sends audio digitally to the connected device and includes its own audio interface, so a separate interface is not normally needed. This can make it a practical choice if you record one source at a computer and want a simpler setup. Check that your recording device supports the microphone and that it offers the pickup pattern or channels you need.

XLR: more modular, with more gear
A conventional XLR microphone needs an audio interface or recorder to record to a computer. A two-microphone arrangement needs a recording path with enough inputs. That extra hardware can give you a more modular setup, but it also means more compatibility checks and setup than plugging in one USB mic.

What microphone should you buy for product ASMR videos?
For close-up product sounds, decide whether you want a direct, centered recording or a spatial image as hands move around the object. A simple USB setup can be a practical starting point for recording at a computer; a stereo-capable arrangement can capture left-to-right movement. If you specifically want an ear-to-ear binaural effect, select a binaural setup rather than assuming that any stereo mode will provide it. Also consider whether handling noise, room sound, or the distance between the microphone and the object will dominate the recording.

Placement and gain: get a clean recording
Microphone placement and gain affect both the voice or trigger sounds and the noise captured around them. MusicRadar’s general voice-recording guidance recommends aiming the diaphragm toward the mouth and gives roughly 6–12 inches as a starting distance for ordinary voice recording. That is not an ASMR-tested optimum: close-up triggers and different microphones may need different placement.
- Position the microphone toward the sound source and make a short test recording before a full session.
- Set gain so quiet sounds are captured clearly without clipping on louder taps, whispers, or handling noises.
- Listen back for room noise and unwanted vibration; adjust placement and gain rather than assuming a different microphone alone will solve them.
- For paired microphones, check that both channels record and that the left-right image matches your intended setup.
Pre-purchase compatibility checklist
- Connection: Does the microphone connect directly by USB, or do you need an XLR interface or recorder?
- Channel count: Can your recording device handle the number of microphones and channels you plan to use?
- Sound image: Do you need mono/close voice, conventional stereo, or binaural sound?
- Portability: Do you need a standalone recorder, and does the exact model support the microphones you want?
- Complete setup: Include any necessary interface or recorder, inputs, cables, stands, and recording-device compatibility in your decision.
- Current listing: Verify the exact model generation, connection details, and availability before purchasing.
Common setup problems
The microphone appears connected, but the recording is silent
Check that the recording software is using the intended input and that the device recognizes the microphone or interface. With XLR, confirm the microphone is connected through a compatible interface or recorder and that the selected input is active.

A two-microphone setup records only one channel
Check the recording device’s input count and channel routing. A pair needs a recording path with enough inputs, and both channels must be enabled in the recording software or recorder.
The recording sounds noisy or clips
Recheck microphone direction, placement, and gain. A signal that is too quiet may encourage excessive gain; a signal that is too strong can clip. Make a test recording at the levels and distances you expect to use.

The result is stereo, but not binaural
Stereo mode does not by itself create binaural sound. For binaural capture, use two omnidirectional microphones in a suitable binaural arrangement and verify the complete recording path.
