Caleb Malhotra made his collegiate debut as Boston University opened its 2026–27 men’s hockey season with a 2–1 overtime victory over Alaska in Fairbanks on October 2, 2026. The Vancouver Canucks prospect had two shots and two penalty minutes, and set up a third-period chance for captain Jack Harvey, but finished without a goal or an assist.
What Malhotra did in his first college game
Malhotra, a freshman centre, made a third-period pass to Jack Harvey that gave the BU captain a scoring chance. Alaska goaltender Tyler Shea stopped Harvey’s attempt. Malhotra did not earn a point on the play; the official box score lists no goal or assist for him.
His box-score line was two shots and two penalty minutes. He was assessed a tripping penalty in the second period. College Hockey, Inc.’s official box score records those statistics.
How BU beat Alaska
BU and Alaska each scored in the first period. Jack Murtagh put the Terriers on the board, assisted by Tynan Lawrence; Alaska’s Linden Burrett scored on the power play. The teams remained tied until Lawrence scored the winner at 1:18 of overtime, with Harvey and Carter Amico assisting.

Why Malhotra is a Canucks name to watch
Vancouver selected Malhotra third overall in the 2026 NHL Draft after he played for the OHL’s Brantford Bulldogs. He chose Boston University for the 2026–27 season. In a June 2026 Canucks feature, Malhotra cited the program’s pedigree and the number of players who had succeeded there when discussing his decision. That is background on his college choice, not a comment about his debut.

BU’s recap is inconsistent: its headline, period table and play-by-play describe an overtime finish, but its opening sentence places Lawrence’s goal in regulation. The College Hockey, Inc. box score records the goal at 1:18 of overtime, matching the recap’s period table, so that is the timing used here.
