Yes. You can play prerecorded podcast episodes in different source formats in one YouTube live stream, provided your playback software can decode each file and your encoder sends YouTube an audio codec supported by the selected ingest method. The episode files’ formats and the stream’s outgoing format are separate stages.
How different episode formats work in one stream
Your encoder or playback app reads each episode file and mixes its audio into the live production. It then sends an outgoing stream to YouTube. The source files do not all have to use the same format, but each one must play correctly in the software you use, and the outgoing audio must meet YouTube’s requirements for your chosen ingest protocol.
OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among its supported audio media-source types, and supports media-source playlists. That covers many common podcast files, but it does not guarantee playback of every codec, profile, or damaged file. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Choose the outgoing audio settings for YouTube
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. For standard stereo audio, its published recommendations are a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. These describe the stream sent to YouTube, not a requirement that every episode source file use those same settings. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance before configuring a production.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube also supports HLS ingestion, for which its guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments. Use HLS only if your encoder and workflow support it and its latency trade-off suits the broadcast; see YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
| Ingest method | Audio codecs listed by YouTube | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. |
| HLS | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | Higher latency than RTMP, according to YouTube. |
YouTube transcodes live streams into viewing formats for audiences, so the delivered playback format is not necessarily the original episode file unchanged. The encoder settings are about what you send to YouTube; YouTube’s guidance explains its viewer-side transcoding at its encoder settings page.

Set up and test a mixed-format episode stream in OBS
- Add the episodes: In OBS, add each file as a media source in a scene, or configure a media-source playlist. Use files in formats OBS documents, such as MP3, AAC, OGG, or WAV, and test every file rather than assuming a format label guarantees compatibility.
- Check the audio mix: Start playback for each source and watch the OBS audio mixer. Confirm the source is not muted, that the meter responds, and that audio is routed to the stream mix. Listen for clipping, unexpectedly quiet files, or silence at the beginning or end.
- Set the outgoing audio: Configure your encoder’s audio output to a codec listed for the YouTube ingest protocol you selected. For RTMP/RTMPS stereo, use YouTube’s 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps recommendations as a starting point.
- Connect to YouTube: In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its stream key in OBS’s streaming setup. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Run a private or unlisted test: Include episode changes and transitions, not just a few seconds of one file. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the event. Confirm that sound reaches the YouTube preview before making the broadcast public.
An unusual file or an encoder other than OBS may behave differently. The cited documentation identifies OBS source types and YouTube ingest codecs; it does not certify every possible file encoding or third-party encoder’s conversion behavior. Test the exact files and settings you plan to use.
Keep RSS podcast publishing separate from a live stream
YouTube’s podcast RSS feature is a different publishing workflow, not a way to create a continuous live broadcast. YouTube describes a podcast as a playlist of videos. With RSS ingestion, it creates a separate video for selected feed episodes, typically pairing episode audio with the show’s static art; new feed episodes can upload automatically. Availability is limited to selected countries or regions. Details are in YouTube’s guides to delivering podcasts using an RSS feed and distributing podcasts on YouTube.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
There is also a correction difference: YouTube says an RSS-ingested episode’s audio cannot be changed automatically after publication. Sending a corrected file from the feed creates a new video and makes the old one private. That RSS limitation is separate from the format handling of an encoder-based livestream.
Common problems and fixes
- A file will not play in OBS: Confirm that it is a supported media-source type and that the file itself plays outside the stream. Try converting an unsupported or problematic source to a format your playback software handles, then test the converted file before going live.
- The episode plays locally but viewers hear nothing: Check that the source is not muted and that its audio reaches OBS’s stream mix. Verify the meter and listen to a test broadcast in YouTube’s preview.
- One episode is much louder than another: Different source files may have different loudness levels. Adjust or normalize the files before the broadcast, then listen to transitions in a test so level changes do not surprise listeners.
- YouTube reports an audio or stream issue: Verify that the outgoing codec matches the selected ingest protocol and that the sample rate and bitrate are configured as intended. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a test.
- HLS feels too delayed: YouTube documents higher latency for HLS than RTMP. If low delay matters and your encoder supports it, consider the RTMP/RTMPS route instead.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded episodes, StreamNeo can play uploaded videos from the cloud rather than relying on a computer or home connection staying on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
