Channel memberships and YouTube Premium are different
A YouTube channel membership is a paid subscription to one creator’s channel. It can provide perks such as badges and members-only benefits, and members are normally charged at the start of each monthly billing cycle. It is not the same product as YouTube Premium or Google One. YouTube explains channel-member billing and payment information here.
Google Play’s India payment guidance says UPI can be used for subscriptions offered by eligible apps and describes UPI AutoPay mandates, citing YouTube Premium and Google One as examples. That general support does not establish that creator channel memberships accept UPI. See Google Play’s accepted payment methods for India.
What Google says about recurring memberships in India
Google Pay Help states: “Recurring plans for channel memberships are temporarily turned off. Use prepaid plans to use this service.” In other words, UPI AutoPay should not be treated as a way to bypass the current restriction on recurring channel-membership plans. Google’s page recommends prepaid plans but does not confirm that every viewer can pay for one with UPI. Read Google’s guidance on changes to automatic payments in India.

How to check whether UPI is available for your membership
- Open the creator’s YouTube channel or a video from that channel while signed in to the account you want to use.
- Select Join, if the creator has enabled memberships and the option is available to you.
- Review the membership level, price, billing arrangement, and payment methods shown in the checkout flow. If UPI appears as an option for the prepaid plan offered to you, you can use it there; if it does not appear, the general availability of UPI for other Google subscriptions does not make it available for this checkout.
- Follow the on-screen payment prompts to complete the purchase. The options shown for your account are the practical confirmation of what is available to you.

Recurring payment checks and possible verification
For recurring payments where they are available, YouTube says viewers in India may need to verify or re-enter payment details because of RBI eMandate requirements. A viewer’s bank may also not support recurring payments. These checks do not change Google’s separate guidance that recurring channel-membership plans are temporarily turned off; they matter when a recurring payment is being set up for a product or arrangement that supports it. Why the membership price can differ
There is no single price for every creator’s membership. YouTube lists India membership price tiers, but says pricing updates that began rolling out gradually in May 2025 may mean the price differs depending on when a viewer joins. Check the amount displayed for the chosen channel and level in checkout rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere. YouTube’s channel-membership pricing information for Asia Pacific.
