Then retry on the same network, test another Wi‑Fi network, and—if the download still fails—remove the downloaded update and try again. If wireless updating remains unavailable, Apple supports updating through a connected Mac or Windows PC.
Before troubleshooting: confirm the device and prepare it
Apple groups update problems into five common causes: the device is incompatible, storage is insufficient, the download is slow, the device cannot reach the update server, or installation does not complete. Start by checking the exact iPhone or iPad model against Apple’s current compatibility information. A device that cannot install the latest major release may still have a software update available for it.

Before an update, Apple recommends backing up to iCloud or a computer, connecting the device to power and Wi‑Fi, then opening Settings > General > Software Update. If an update appears, tap Download and Install. Some updates may not be available wirelessly. Apple’s guidance applies to iPhone and iPad, so the same checks apply to iOS and iPadOS.

If the update is missing or says the device is incompatible
Check the model against Apple’s current supported-device list rather than assuming every iPhone or iPad can run the newest release. Compatibility changes as new versions are released. If the model is supported but no update appears, continue with the connection and storage checks below; Apple also lists a Mac or PC update as an alternative when an update does not appear wirelessly.

If there isn’t enough storage
Open Settings > General > [device] Storage and review available space. You can enable Offload Unused Apps to remove apps you do not use while retaining their documents and data, or delete apps manually if you prefer to choose what is removed.
If the update offers to temporarily remove apps to make room, choosing Continue allows that. Apple says those apps are reinstalled automatically after the update finishes.

If the download is slow
Download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed. Stay connected to Wi‑Fi and avoid downloading other content at the same time. You can continue using the device while the update downloads; it will notify you when it is ready to install. Keep the device connected to power during installation.

- “Unable to Download. This update requires a Wi-Fi network connection to download.”
Retry the update on the same network. If the alert persists, try a different Wi‑Fi network or use a Mac or PC. VPN or proxy connections may prevent the device from contacting Apple’s update servers, so check whether one is active. If the problem returns across networks, remove the downloaded update file and download it again: open Settings > General > [device] Storage, find the update in the list, tap it, and choose Delete Update. Then return to Settings > General > Software Update and try again. See Apple’s update troubleshooting steps.
Check whether Wi‑Fi itself has internet access
A Wi‑Fi symbol only shows that the device is connected to a network; it does not prove that the network can reach the internet. In Settings > Wi‑Fi, make sure Wi‑Fi is on and the intended network is selected, and check that Airplane Mode is off. If the Wi‑Fi control is dimmed, Apple suggests restarting the device.

If the device reports “No Internet Connection,” check whether other devices can use that same network. Then test the iPhone or iPad on another Wi‑Fi network or in another location. If the problem follows the device, the cause may be device-specific; if it happens only on one network, focus on that network.
For a network-specific problem, check that the router is powered on, the device is within range, and the router firmware is current. If the router supports multiple Wi‑Fi frequencies, try another supported frequency. Restarting the router and modem may refresh the connection. When VPN or security software may be involved
Apple recommends uninstalling VPN or security software as a diagnostic step when troubleshooting Wi‑Fi, then restarting and testing the connection. If removing the software resolves the issue but you need it, contact its provider or your VPN manager. On a work- or school-managed device, check with IT before changing or removing managed settings.

Reset Network Settings is a later troubleshooting step, not the first thing to try. It removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, mobile settings, and VPN and APN settings. If your device or network is managed by a school or business, consult its IT administrator first.
To reset, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings. You will need to reconnect to Wi‑Fi afterward.
If installation appears stuck
Update duration can vary with the update size and the device’s available storage. Keep the device connected to power and allow the progress indicator time to move; do not casually restart or interrupt an update that is still in progress. If the battery runs out, reconnect the device to power and turn it on so the update or restore can complete. If the device is frozen rather than simply progressing slowly, follow Apple’s instructions for a frozen iPhone or iPad.
When to update with a computer instead
A computer is a useful fallback if the update does not appear on the device or wireless updating continues to fail. Apple’s current instructions cover updating with a Mac or Windows PC; the app used depends on the computer’s operating-system version. Apple’s deployment guidance names Finder or Apple Configurator for a physically connected update on Mac, and Apple Devices on PC. Follow Apple’s computer-update instructions for the computer you have.
