What to Do When Meta AI Gives Inaccurate or Unwanted Answers

Check important claims before acting on them, then use the control that matches the problem: rate a response, report a cited source or link, reset information shared in an AI chat, or limit interaction where the app currently allows it. These actions serve different purposes; none guarantees an immediate correction or a universal way to turn Meta AI off.

First, check whether the answer is reliable

Meta says its AI may not have the most complete or recent information and may produce inaccurate or inappropriate outputs. Treat an answer as a claim to verify, especially when it could affect your health, finances, safety, legal rights, or another consequential decision.

  • Open any source or link shown with the response and check whether it actually supports the claim.
  • For an important decision, compare the claim with authoritative primary sources or other trusted references.
  • Do not treat a citation as proof: a linked page can be irrelevant, outdated, or inconsistent with the answer.

Meta describes these limitations in its responsible approach to Meta AI and Meta Llama 3. The sources cited here do not establish a universal in-product fact-check button.

Give feedback on a bad response

WhatsApp Web

On WhatsApp Web, hover over the Meta AI message or image and select “Good response” or “Bad response,” as described in WhatsApp’s Help Center article, “How to provide feedback about responses from Meta AI.” These instructions are specific to WhatsApp Web; controls can differ in other apps or on other devices, so look at the controls attached to the response you received.

Meta says it reviews feedback to assess whether responses are helpful or against its guidelines, and uses feedback in ongoing model training. That is Meta’s description of its process, not a guarantee that one submission will change a particular answer, trigger a personal reply, or produce an immediate correction.

What response feedback does—and does not do

A bad-response rating flags the answer itself. It is not the same as checking whether the answer is true, reporting a linked source, or deleting information shared in a chat.

Report a questionable source or link separately

If a WhatsApp Meta AI response includes an internet source or link that seems unreliable, use the source-reporting option described in the WhatsApp Help Center article “How to report a source or link used in a response from Meta AI.” Reporting a source flags it for review; it does not establish that the source is false. Open and assess the page, and corroborate important claims independently.

Reset information shared in an AI chat

Meta’s privacy guidance says you can type /reset-ai in a conversation to delete information shared in an AI chat across Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp. Meta describes this as a chat control; it should not be read as deleting all account data, all processing records, or information outside that AI chat.

In group chats with friends and family where Meta AI is invoked, Meta says it reads messages that invoke “@Meta AI” or replies invoking “@Meta AI,” rather than other messages in that chat. See Meta’s privacy guidance on generative AI for its description of these controls and data practices.

Reduce unwanted appearances without assuming there is a global off switch

Meta AI appears in different places across Meta’s apps, and the available controls can depend on the app and interface. An Associated Press report dated May 30, 2024 described muting in some Facebook and Instagram entry points, but noted that muting did not make the assistant disappear everywhere. Those are historical examples, not reliable current instructions for every app or device.

To deal with an unwanted appearance, identify where it occurs—such as a search entry point, chat, feed, or standalone app—and check that product’s current settings and help information for a mute, hide, or notification control. Current exact steps to disable Meta AI across all Meta surfaces are not established here, so do not assume one setting removes it everywhere.

Choose the action that fits the problem

What you want to do Action What it means
Flag an answer as unhelpful Use the response feedback control available on that surface. On WhatsApp Web, select “Bad response.” Signals a concern about the response; it does not promise immediate correction.
Flag a cited internet source or link Use WhatsApp’s source or link reporting option where available. Flags the source or link; it does not prove the content is false.
Check whether a claim is true Open the citation and compare important claims with trusted sources. Tests the claim independently of any report or rating.
Delete information shared in an AI chat Type /reset-ai in the conversation. Meta says this deletes information shared in an AI chat, not all data associated with your account.
See less of an assistant entry point Check the current controls in the specific app where it appears. Availability varies; a control in one place should not be assumed to disable Meta AI everywhere.
