Can’t Send Photos on Facebook Messenger? How to Fix It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Messenger won’t send a photo, first try sending one small image in a different chat, then try the same image at Messenger.com. If it works in another chat, the problem is likely specific to the conversation; if it works on the web but not in the app, check the app or device. The main causes are connection trouble, photo permissions, an app problem, an oversized or unusual file, a recipient or account restriction, or a service-side issue.

Identify what is failing first

What happens Where to start
The gallery or photo button is missing or does nothing Check Messenger’s photo permissions, then update or restart the app.
You cannot find recent photos in Messenger Check whether Messenger has photo access and whether the images are fully downloaded to the device.
A photo is selected but stays on “Sending” or fails Test the connection, try one smaller photo, and check another chat.
Photos and text messages both fail Look for a broader chat, account, connection, or service problem.
Photos fail in only one conversation Check the recipient or group rather than resetting the whole app.
A photo sends but appears black, blank, or broken Treat this as a media-loading or display problem, not just a sending failure.
Photos work in a browser but not in the mobile app Focus on the app, its permissions, or the device.

For a quick diagnosis, send a text in the same chat, then send one small photo to another conversation. Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data and, if possible, test the same chat at Messenger.com. If the browser succeeds but the app does not, the app or device is the likelier source. If text and photos fail across chats and access methods, consider an account or wider service problem.

Try the fastest fixes

  1. Switch networks. Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi instead of mobile data. If you use a VPN, turn it off temporarily for the test. Keep Messenger open while a photo uploads, and try one image rather than a batch. Meta recommends a reliable connection when messages will not send (Meta’s troubleshooting guidance; connection troubleshooting).
  2. Try a smaller photo. Send a single ordinary photo rather than a large edited image or several HD photos at once. If the small test succeeds, the original file or upload load may be involved.
  3. Check available device storage. Low storage can interfere with app updates and temporary media handling. Free space if needed, then try again; Meta includes storage among its troubleshooting checks (Meta’s troubleshooting guidance).
  4. Close Messenger and reopen it. If that does not help, restart the phone or tablet and test again.
  5. Update Messenger. Install the latest available version from the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Meta recommends updating the app when messages or features are not working (Messenger update and troubleshooting help).

Check photo and camera permissions

If the gallery button is missing, unresponsive, or shows only some images, Messenger may not have access to the photos you want to send. Permission labels and settings differ by operating-system version, and limited photo access may let the app see only selected images.

On iPhone or iPad

Open the device’s Settings, find Messenger in the app or privacy permissions, and allow the Photos access needed for the image you want to share. If access is limited to selected photos, add the missing image or choose a broader Photos access option if you prefer. Allow Camera only if you want to take a picture inside Messenger; it is not needed to send an existing photo.

Allow Camera only if you need to take a new picture in Messenger. Android permission labels vary by version; Meta explains its permission controls in its Android permissions guidance.

Reopen Messenger and try the photo again. If a recent picture is still absent, check whether it is stored only in a cloud service and needs to be downloaded to the device first.

Check the photo’s size and format

Meta’s Messenger Help Center states that photos, videos, stickers, GIFs, and similar chat attachments can be up to 25 MB (Messenger attachment guidance). A separate Meta announcement on April 9, 2024 described sending files up to 100 MB from a phone through the + option. That larger file-sending allowance should not be treated as a promise that every photo attachment can be 100 MB (Meta’s announcement). Availability and interface can vary.

  • Try one image under the documented 25 MB chat-attachment limit.
  • Use a JPEG or PNG as a simple diagnostic test. This is a practical test, not a complete or definitive Messenger format specification.
  • Try the original image rather than an edited or exported copy, which may be larger or have an unusual encoding.
  • If the image is large, reduce its size or use the file-attachment option through + if it appears in your app. File attachment availability can vary by region and interface.
  • Turn off HD only if the problem occurs specifically with HD photos; larger images can take longer to upload, but HD is not automatically the cause.

Fix the Messenger app without risking data unnecessarily

After checking permissions and connection, close and reopen the app, restart the device, and update Messenger. On Android, clearing the app’s cache may help if the app is malfunctioning: find Messenger in Settings under Apps or Storage and choose Clear cache, if available. Avoid choosing Clear data as a first step; that can sign you out or remove locally stored information. Labels and behavior vary by Android version.

Find out whether the recipient or chat is the problem

If photos fail in only one conversation, send the same image to another trusted contact and try sending a text to the affected recipient. A one-chat failure does not by itself show that your app is broken.

  • The other person may have deactivated or deleted their account, or either of you may have blocked the other.
  • In a group conversation, members may have left, affecting that conversation.
  • If text and photos fail across chats, Messenger may have temporarily restricted your ability to send messages. Meta says restrictions can follow a high volume of messages in a short period or activity that conflicts with its standards; its guidance does not give one universal duration (Meta’s messaging troubleshooting guidance).

Do not assume a block or restriction without an explicit notice or other evidence. Repeatedly retrying or sending many files is unlikely to clarify the cause.

Use Messenger.com as a workaround and diagnostic

Open Messenger.com or Facebook in a current browser, sign in to the same account, open the chat, and use the photo or media button beside the text box to send one small image. Meta describes photo sending on Messenger.com in its web attachment help. File-attachment availability may differ in some European countries.

If the image sends in the browser but not in the mobile app, the account and chat can send it, so focus on the app, permissions, or device. If it fails in the browser too, check the file, network, affected chat, and account before concluding that Messenger is down.

If the photo sends but looks broken

A black box, empty box, or broken image after sending is different from an upload that remains stuck. Try viewing the chat on the web, reopen Messenger, and test another network. If the display problem persists, Meta has separate guidance for photos that appear black, blank, or broken. Report it as a broken media feature rather than repeatedly resending the image.

Report a persistent problem to Meta

If the problem continues after the tests above, update Messenger and report the broken feature through the app’s profile or settings area. Meta recommends describing the steps that reproduce the issue and including screenshots (Messenger problem reporting). On Facebook desktop, Meta also lists Help & support → Report a problem; mobile reporting options can vary (Facebook problem reporting).

Include the device model, operating-system and Messenger versions, whether text works, whether all chats are affected, whether the image works in a browser, the approximate file size and format, the error screenshot, and when it happened. Use only Meta’s official Help Center and in-app reporting. Do not pay unofficial “Facebook support” accounts or give anyone your password or login codes.
