If your AirPods Pro play in only one ear, first check whether both earbuds are charging, then test the silent one by itself. Next check audio balance, inspect the speaker mesh, and reset only if those checks do not help. This sequence separates a charging or settings problem from a fault that may need service.
Identify what is happening
The next step depends on whether the AirPod is silent, quiet, missing from the battery display, or failing only with one device or app.
- Completely silent: Check charging and detection first, then test the earbud alone. If it is detected and charged, check its mesh and pairing.
- Much quieter than the other: Check the speaker mesh, ear tip, fit, and stereo balance. A blocked mesh can reduce sound, but it cannot be diagnosed remotely.
- Not shown in the battery display or detected intermittently: Reseat it in the case and check for debris around the charging contact. The case itself may also need charging.
- Works in some apps or on some devices: Check the selected audio output and the app or source before treating the AirPod as faulty.
Apple’s current troubleshooting guide for a left or right AirPod that is not working recommends checking charge, testing each AirPod, cleaning when needed, checking balance, and resetting if the issue persists.
Check that both AirPods charge
- Put both AirPods in the charging case and leave them there for at least 30 seconds.
- Open the case near your iPhone or iPad and check the battery card. Confirm that each AirPod appears and shows a charge or charging indicator.
- If one is missing or not charging, take it out and reseat it. Check for debris around the AirPod and case contact, and connect the case to power if its charge is low.
Use the battery display as a clue, not a diagnosis: an AirPod that is absent may have a detection, contact, or hardware issue; one showing 0% or not charging calls for charging checks first. A normal percentage does not prove that its battery or speaker is healthy. If its level repeatedly differs sharply from the other side, a charging-contact problem or battery degradation is possible, but service testing is needed to determine the cause.

If the AirPod is detected intermittently, note whether its charging indicator changes when you reseat it. Do not scrape the contacts or insert anything sharp into the case ports; Apple warns that objects can damage the metal contacts.
Test the silent AirPod by itself
- After the charge check, put the malfunctioning AirPod in the appropriate ear.
- Leave the other AirPod in the charging case and close the lid.
- Play audio and check whether the test AirPod produces sound.
This is Apple’s individual-earbud test. If it works alone but not during a two-earbud session, detection, pairing, or audio routing may be involved. If it remains silent alone, continue with balance, cleaning, and reset checks.
Check audio balance and output selection
iPhone or iPad
Go to Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual → Balance and center the slider. An off-center setting can make audio seem to come from only one side. This check is especially useful when the AirPod is quiet rather than missing from the device, or when the imbalance occurs across several apps.

- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you

Mac and other devices
Confirm that the AirPods are selected as the active audio output and check the device’s left/right balance setting. Menu names vary by macOS version, so use the current sound settings for your version rather than relying on a single path. On any device, try another audio app or a known stereo recording; one recording or app can itself have a channel problem.

Inspect and clean the AirPods Pro safely
Remove the ear tip and inspect the speaker mesh and tip for debris or blockage. Check that the tip is attached correctly and that the AirPod sits securely. Poor fit can make one side seem quieter even when it is playing.
Apple’s detailed mesh-cleaning procedure on its AirPods Pro cleaning page is specifically organized for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3. Follow the instructions for your generation rather than assuming every method applies to every model. For those two generations, Apple specifies micellar water containing PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, distilled water, a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, small cups, and a paper towel. The procedure calls for brushing the mesh in circles for about 15 seconds, repeating three times, rinsing with distilled water, and letting the AirPods dry completely for at least two hours.

- Do not use sharp objects or abrasive materials, and do not put AirPods Pro under running water.
- Do not charge or use wet AirPods; let them dry completely after cleaning.
- Clean the case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If needed, slightly dampen the cloth with isopropyl alcohol, keeping liquid out of the charging ports.
- Do not put objects into the case’s charging ports; the metal contacts can be damaged.
After cleaning, test audio again before resetting. If sound is still faint on one side, do not assume debris was the only cause.
Reset AirPods Pro if the checks above do not help
Reset instructions differ by generation. Apple’s AirPods reset guide uses a rear setup button for AirPods Pro 1 and 2, but a sequence of taps on the front of the case for AirPods Pro 3.
AirPods Pro 1 or AirPods Pro 2
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On the paired iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Bluetooth. Under My Devices, tap the information button next to the AirPods, choose Forget This Device, and confirm if the entry appears.
- Open the case lid and hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds.
- Release when the status light flashes amber, then white.
- Reconnect the AirPods using the onscreen setup prompt.
AirPods Pro 3
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On the paired iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Bluetooth. Forget the AirPods if they appear under My Devices.
- Open the lid. Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on.
- When the light flashes white, double-tap the front again. When it flashes faster, double-tap a third time.
- Wait for the light to flash amber, then white, and reconnect using the onscreen prompt.
Do not use the rear-button hold procedure for AirPods Pro 3; its current reset procedure uses the front of the case.

Find out whether the problem follows the AirPods
After testing and, if needed, resetting, try the AirPods with another phone, tablet, Mac, or Bluetooth audio source. Also try a different app and compare music or a known stereo video with a phone call. Confirm the AirPods are selected as the output and temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth audio devices.
- If the problem follows the same AirPod across devices and apps, charging, blockage, pairing, or hardware is more likely.
- If it happens only on one device or in one app, investigate that device’s output selection, balance, accessibility settings, or the recording before replacing an earbud.
- If music works but calls do not, the issue may involve the microphone or call routing rather than the speaker. If only Transparency or noise cancellation is affected, check whether ordinary music playback is also affected before assuming the speaker has failed.
A reset can address a pairing or configuration problem; it cannot repair a damaged speaker, failed battery, blocked mesh, or faulty case contact. No particular firmware version is established here as a universal fix, so do not treat an update as a guaranteed solution.
If you replaced one AirPod
A replacement earbud may need to be configured with the other earbud and case rather than working immediately. Apple’s replacement AirPods setup instructions distinguish between Pro generations.

When to seek service or replace an earbud
Arrange service if one AirPod never appears as charging, is not detected after reseating, remains silent after cleaning and reset, rapidly loses charge, or has been dropped or exposed to liquid. Failure on multiple devices after the checks above also makes a hardware problem more likely. If the problem is persistent or worsening, a hearing or ear-related cause is another possibility; an audiologist or health professional can assess that rather than an AirPods reset.
Apple offers in-person and mail-in AirPods service and replacement options. Its AirPods service and repair page says the final price requires inspection; estimates may vary by model, location, tax, shipping, and service provider. Apple’s Limited Warranty covers manufacturing issues for one year from purchase; accidental damage and normal battery wear are generally excluded under the stated warranty terms. Service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer. Coverage and fees depend on the fault, plan, and location, so check eligibility before approving service.
For one failed earbud in an otherwise healthy set, compare the model-specific service estimate with the cost of replacing the set. If an older pair has multiple battery or hardware problems, a new set may be more practical. Avoid relying on a universal single-earbud price: Apple requires a model-specific estimate.
