Can’t Connect to Wi-Fi? Find the Cause and Fix It

Separate a Wi-Fi connection failure from a no-internet problem, then follow practical checks for Android, Windows, routers, and managed networks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First check whether your device cannot join the Wi-Fi network, or whether it is connected to Wi-Fi but cannot reach the internet. These are different problems: Wi-Fi connects your device to a local network, while the router or network must also have a working internet connection. The distinction helps you choose the right next step.

Why can’t I connect to Wi-Fi?

Start with the device and the network name. A Wi-Fi icon or signal indicator does not always mean the device is connected to the network you intended, and joining a network does not by itself confirm internet access.

  • Make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off.
  • Check that you selected the correct network name and entered its current password.
  • Look at the signal indicator. If it is weak, move closer to the router and try again.
  • Restart the device. Google includes a device restart in its Android internet-connection troubleshooting guidance.

If you use Android and have mobile data available, compare it with Wi-Fi. If mobile data works but Wi-Fi does not, that helps narrow the issue to the wireless connection or network rather than all internet access on the device.

Why does Wi-Fi say connected but there’s no internet?

A device can join the router’s local Wi-Fi network while the router has lost its connection to the internet. If several devices on the same home network cannot get online, the router, modem, or internet service is a more useful place to investigate than changing settings on each device.

Restart home networking equipment

Follow the instructions for your specific modem and router; they may be separate devices or a combined unit. Google describes a typical router restart as unplugging it, waiting 30 seconds, plugging it back in, and waiting for its lights to return. Microsoft also recommends restarting the modem and router as directed for the equipment. This temporarily disconnects everyone using the network.

A restart is not a factory reset. Do not press a reset button or restore factory settings unless your equipment instructions or provider specifically direct you to do so; that is a different action and can erase configuration.

Decide who to contact

  • For a home connection that still has no internet after equipment checks, contact your internet service provider (ISP).
  • For public or managed Wi-Fi, contact the network host or administrator. The network may require instructions or access details that only its host can provide.

What if only one device will not connect?

If other devices can use the same Wi-Fi, focus first on the affected device: confirm Wi-Fi is enabled, Airplane mode is off, the network name is correct, and the password is current. If the signal is poor where you are, move closer to the router before changing saved settings.

Forget the saved network and reconnect

Forgetting a network removes its saved connection details, so have the correct password ready. Then select the network again and join it as a new connection.

  1. Windows 10 or Windows 11: Open Wi-Fi settings, go to Manage known networks, select the affected network, choose Forget, and reconnect by selecting the network and entering its password. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers these steps for both versions.
  2. Android: Open Internet settings, select the saved network, and choose Forget or Remove; the exact labels and location vary by device and Android version. Return to the network list and join it again. Google explains connecting to and forgetting Wi-Fi networks on Android.

If the network is hidden, Android’s Wi-Fi setup can add it using its network name and security details; choose the hidden-network option when prompted. You will need accurate details from the network owner.

How can I tell whether the problem is Wi-Fi or the internet connection?

Compare affected devices and, if available, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection. These checks do not prove every cause, but they help locate where to focus.

  • Several devices fail on the same Wi-Fi: Check the router, modem, or internet service, then contact the ISP or network host if needed.
  • Only one device fails: Recheck that device’s Wi-Fi, Airplane mode, selected network, password, and saved connection.
  • The Wi-Fi signal is weak: Move nearer to the router and check whether the connection improves.
  • Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not: A wired internet connection can point to a wireless-router problem. Microsoft Support says, “If you can connect to the Internet using an Ethernet cable, it confirms the connection problem is due to the Wi-Fi router.” Treat this as a diagnostic clue, not proof that every underlying issue has the same cause. You need a device and network equipment that support Ethernet; a suitable cable may be needed if you do not already have one.

Microsoft describes Network reset as a last step, not an opening fix. It removes network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters after the device restarts. VPN software or virtual switches may need reinstalling or reconfiguration, and network profiles may change. Review Microsoft’s Windows guidance before using it.
