The fix depends on where Windows Setup stops. If the laptop will not start from the USB, check the boot selection and installation media. If Setup opens but shows no internal SSD, check the exact laptop model’s storage-driver instructions. A partition error or a stall during first-time setup is a different problem. Identify the screen and exact message before changing firmware settings or deleting partitions.
First, identify where installation stops
- The USB does not start Windows Setup: investigate the boot menu, boot order, and installation media.
- Setup opens, but no internal drive appears: investigate storage-driver support for the exact laptop model.
- The drive appears, but Setup rejects the destination: note the exact error; do not delete or format partitions without understanding the consequences.
- Windows installs, but first-time setup stalls: check the separate internet and account requirements for initial setup.
Messages such as “We couldn’t find any drives” or “We couldn’t find any drivers” appear in user reports, but the wording alone does not establish the cause. Record the full message and which screen displays it. If the laptop will not boot from the USB
- Recreate the installer on a working PC. Use Microsoft’s Windows installation media creation tool to make current Windows 11 installation media.
- Open the laptop’s boot-device menu. Use the key or method specified by the laptop manufacturer, then select the USB drive. The key varies by computer; Microsoft’s manual Windows-from-USB instructions also direct users to the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Confirm what happens after selecting it. If the USB appears in the menu but Setup still does not open, recreate the media and check the maker’s boot and compatibility instructions. A storage driver is not the next step unless an on-screen error actually points to one.
Microsoft’s manual deployment instructions specify a USB flash drive with at least 5 GB free and warn that the drive will be formatted. That figure applies to that manual method; it is not a universal size specification for every media-creation workflow. Microsoft Learn: Install Windows from a Flash Drive
If Windows Setup opens but shows no internal SSD
This is a disk-visibility issue, not a USB-boot issue. Microsoft explains that Setup may be unable to locate its target disk or partition when the installation media or Windows image lacks the disk driver. For manual Setup, its instructions describe selecting Have Disk and browsing to the driver package. Microsoft Learn: Install a boot-start driver

Load the storage driver for your exact model
- On another computer, open the laptop maker’s support page and search by the exact model or service identifier. Check whether it provides a storage-controller driver required during Windows installation.
- Download the OEM-provided driver package and extract the driver files as the manufacturer instructs. Setup generally needs the driver files and their folder, not merely a setup executable.
- Copy the extracted files to a USB drive accessible during installation. At the disk-selection screen, choose Load driver (or the corresponding prompt), browse to the extracted folder, and follow Setup’s prompts.
The folder structure and driver names vary. Follow the instructions for the laptop model rather than choosing a similar-sounding package at random.
Understand whether Intel RST or VMD applies
Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) and Volume Management Device (VMD) drivers are one documented cause of an invisible disk on some Intel-based laptops—not a general fix for every new laptop. ASUS scopes its instructions to specified 11th-, 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation Intel processor families; Dell likewise documents an RST/VMD driver-loading procedure for specified systems. Check the model-specific guidance before using either method: ASUS Support: Cannot Find Drives When Installing Windows OS and Dell Support: No Drives Can Be Found During Windows 10 and Windows 11 Installation.

Change a firmware storage setting only when the manufacturer says to
Some laptops expose a VMD or storage-controller setting in firmware. ASUS documents a VMD setting route as well as driver loading, while Dell’s cited procedure walks users through loading the RST VMD driver. These are model-dependent options, not interchangeable universal fixes. Do not disable VMD or change RAID/AHCI settings unless the exact laptop’s instructions support that change.

If the SSD is missing in firmware too
Check whether the internal SSD is detected in the laptop’s UEFI/BIOS. If it is absent there as well, Windows Setup’s driver-loading guidance cannot determine whether the drive is faulty. For a new laptop, contact the seller or manufacturer for model-specific diagnostics and warranty support.

If the SSD appears but Setup rejects the destination
Do not delete, format, or repartition the drive based only on a blank list or an error you have not identified. The applicable fix depends on the exact message and selected destination; the information here does not establish a particular partition problem. Check Windows 11 compatibility without confusing it with disk detection
Microsoft lists UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability and TPM version 2.0 among Windows 11 system requirements. Secure Boot is a startup security feature that permits trusted, digitally signed software to run; firmware configuration can affect whether it appears available. Follow the laptop maker’s instructions and distinguish a device’s capability from whether a setting is currently enabled. These requirements are compatibility context, not an explanation for every USB-boot or missing-drive error. Windows 11 System Requirements; Windows 11 and Secure Boot
