Canon EOS R7 Review: A Fast APS-C Camera with Important Trade-Offs

The Canon EOS R7 is a fast APS-C camera for wildlife, sports and hybrid shooting, but electronic rolling shutter, low-light video AF and lens choice deserve consideration.

The Canon EOS R7 is a compelling APS-C mirrorless camera for wildlife, sports and other fast-moving subjects, with strong still-photo autofocus, rapid burst options and 4K60p video. Its main trade-offs are rolling-shutter distortion with electronic capture, an EVF that DPReview found underwhelming for the price, and a native RF-S lens selection that DPReview described as limited when it reviewed the camera. Whether it is a good fit depends on the kinds of subjects you shoot, the lenses you need and how much you rely on electronic bursts or low-light video autofocus.

What the EOS R7 is—and who it suits

The EOS R7 is a mirrorless camera built around a 32.5-megapixel APS-C sensor and Canon’s RF mount. APS-C is a smaller sensor format than full frame; its crop format affects how a lens frames a subject, so lens choice matters when you are planning for wildlife or sports. Canon’s specifications and product information are available on its EOS R7 support page.

Its feature mix is especially appealing if you photograph animals, sports or action and want a high burst rate alongside subject-recognition autofocus. It can also serve as a hybrid stills-and-video camera, though its video autofocus behavior in low light and rolling shutter are worth weighing if video is a major part of your work.

Autofocus and burst shooting

Canon lists Dual Pixel CMOS AF, up to 651 AF zones for stills, and people, animal and vehicle subject detection in supported settings. DPReview found still-photo tracking reliable in its review, including subject-specific tracking modes. That assessment does not guarantee the same results with every subject, lens, lighting condition or technique.

Canon EOS R7 RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 STM Lens Kit
  • DIGIC X IMAGE PROCESSOR: Enhances performance for sharp photos and ultra-high definition videos
  • CMOS SENSOR: Canon’s 32.5 mp APS-C CMOS sensor ensures images appear crisp
  • RF-S 18-150MM LENS: Easily attach the included RF-S 18-150mm lens to the EOS R7 camera body with the compatible RF mount
  • FULL RANGE LENS CAPABILITY: The EOS R7 is compatible with EF-S, EF, RF, AND THE NEW RF-S MOUNTS (1)
  • HIGH-SPEED CONTINUOUS SHOOTING: With mechanical shutter speeds of up to 15 fps, this camera can continuously shoot sharp images of cars, sporting events, wildlife (2), and more

Canon specifies up to 15 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter. Those rates describe different shutter modes, not a single performance level. The electronic mode can introduce rolling-shutter distortion: fast movement may appear skewed or bent rather than straight. DPReview notes rolling shutter as a concern, so the top electronic rate is not automatically the best choice for every action shot. For subjects where distortion matters, consider whether the mechanical-shutter rate better fits your needs.

Image quality, handling and viewfinder

DPReview’s review praises the R7’s APS-C image quality and JPEGs, deep buffer, handling, twin card slots and decent battery life. These are the reviewer’s assessments, not results from independent testing for this article. Canon lists SD media with UHS-II compatibility; match card speed and capacity to your stills and video workload rather than assuming every SD card will perform alike.

The viewfinder is a notable compromise in DPReview’s assessment. The reviewer judged the 2.36-million-dot EVF underwhelming for the camera’s price. Whether that matters will depend on how much you use the viewfinder and your preference for its clarity and detail.

Video: detailed 4K, with practical caveats

Canon specifies 4K recording at up to 60p. DPReview describes the 4K footage as detailed, but also flags rolling shutter in 4K and autofocus drift when tracking video subjects in low light. Those findings matter for fast pans, rapidly moving subjects and dim scenes where consistent video tracking is important.

Canon also specifies up to 7 stops of coordinated image stabilization. “Up to” is a maximum manufacturer rating in a coordinated-IS context, not a guarantee of stabilization in every setup. Results vary with lens, focal length, technique and shooting conditions.

Lens compatibility and choosing a kit

RF and RF-S lenses attach directly to the R7. Existing EF and EF-S lenses require Canon’s EF-EOS R adapter; EF-M lenses are not compatible. Check Canon’s support page for model-specific compatibility information before buying an adapter or lens.

  • Balancing resolution, speed, and low-light performance, the 32.5MP APS-C CMOS sensor is a versatile chip perfect for both photo and video applications. As one of the first APS-C sensors in the EOS R system, the R7's high-resolution design benefits photographers as well as 4K video by providing a 7K area for oversampling footage, which yields improved sharpness and quality.
  • Borrowed from the R3, the R7 sports a DIGIC X image processor to perform a variety of high-speed tasks, ranging from quick continuous shooting to high-resolution video recording. In terms of high-speed shooting, the R7 supports up to 30 fps continuous shooting with a silent electronic shutter or 15 fps with a mechanical shutter, with AF and AE readings before each frame.
  • Beyond stills, the R7's sensor also offers high-res UHD 4K 60p internal video using the full width of the sensor and the ability to work with 10-bit sampling with Canon Log 3. A 7K recording area can also be used for oversampled 4K shooting at 30p for improved sharpness, reduced moiré, and lower noise. And, for slow-motion playback, 120p recording is supported at up to Full HD resolution.

Canon lists the camera as available on its U.S. shop page as a body or in a kit with the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM. The kit zoom is a versatile starting point, but it should not be treated as a replacement for every long-telephoto lens a wildlife or sports photographer may need. Canon announced the RF-S18-45mm and RF-S18-150mm as standard zooms for this camera generation in 2022. When selecting a lens for wildlife or sports, compare focal length, maximum aperture, stabilization, weight and cost for your intended subjects. If you already own EF or EF-S lenses, include the adapter in your system plan. The body is only part of the total setup; lenses and SD cards also affect cost and shooting capability.

How to decide if the R7 is right for you

Before choosing the R7, consider these factors alongside the specifications and review findings:

  • Subject and motion: Wildlife and sports can benefit from fast still-photo tracking and burst shooting; consider whether electronic-shutter distortion could affect the action you photograph.
  • Stills or video: The review describes detailed 4K, while also noting rolling shutter and low-light video tracking drift. Decide how important those video conditions are to your work.
  • Viewfinder and handling: Consider whether the 2.36-million-dot EVF and the camera’s control layout suit your shooting preferences. DPReview also found the AF joystick awkwardly recessed within the rear command dial.
  • Sensor format and light: The R7’s APS-C sensor affects framing and lens selection. Consider your low-light needs as well as the lenses available for your subjects.
  • Lens system and total setup: Check native RF/RF-S options, any EF/EF-S lenses you plan to adapt, adapter needs and the cost of the lens and cards alongside the body.

These are comparison factors, not a head-to-head ranking against another camera. DPReview’s observations about RF-S lens choice reflect its assessment at the time of its review; they do not establish what is available in today’s lineup. For current compatibility and product configurations, consult Canon’s R7 support page and U.S. product listing.
