Yes. ChatGPT can generate images from text prompts and edit images you upload or create in ChatGPT. You can start in a conversation or open Images, then describe what you want; exact availability and limits can vary by account and plan.
How to create an image in ChatGPT
Open a ChatGPT conversation and describe the image you want, or open Images and enter a prompt there. You can specify details such as the subject, setting, style, and composition. OpenAI says ChatGPT can also follow instructions to include text or details and create an image with a transparent background.

You can choose an aspect ratio. The Help Center also documents image templates and a sketch-to-image workflow in the mobile app, though those options may not appear in every account or work context. Image creation can take a few minutes depending on the prompt.
How to edit an image
Select an image generated in ChatGPT or upload an existing one, then describe the change you want. You can make a conversational request for an overall edit or use the editor to select an area and specify a localized change.

A selection is a guide, not a precise boundary: the edit can spill beyond the highlighted area, and the selection itself may not be exact. Review the result and refine the prompt if the change affects surrounding parts of the image.
Where to find and save generated images
Generated images are saved under Images. From there, OpenAI says you can copy, download, or share them. Deleting the conversation in which an image was created also removes it from My images, according to the ChatGPT Images Help Center.

ChatGPT interface or API: which should you use?

For a one-off image or conversational revisions, the ChatGPT interface is the direct route. The API is intended for developers who need image capabilities in software or an automated workflow.

What to check before using an image
OpenAI’s API guide notes that complex prompts can take up to two minutes, text placement and clarity may be imperfect, recurring characters or brand elements may vary, and precise structured compositions can be difficult. These are vendor-documented limitations, not a guarantee that every image will have those problems.

- Text-sensitive images: Check spelling, legibility, and placement; revise the prompt or the result if the text matters.
- Exact layouts: Inspect the composition carefully and iterate when elements need to appear in specific positions.
- Localized edits: Check the surrounding area too, since an edit can extend beyond the selected region.
How many images can you generate?
OpenAI’s Help Center does not state one universal image-generation quota. The available allowance can depend on your account, plan, and settings, so use the limit shown in ChatGPT rather than relying on a fixed daily number.

In an April 23, 2025 announcement, OpenAI reported that over 130 million users worldwide created more than 700 million images in ChatGPT during its first week of image generation. That is a company-reported figure for that specific week, not a current usage estimate or an independent measurement. The same announcement states: “By default, we never train on customer API data, and all image inputs and outputs remain subject to our API usage policies.” That statement concerns API customer data; it should not be read as a description of consumer ChatGPT data handling.
