The MF656Cdw is the clearer fit for an office that sends faxes or frequently digitizes double-sided paperwork. Its automatic two-sided feeder is designed for that workflow, so originals need less manual handling than a process that requires turning pages over. Check the manual and the operating instructions for the specific scan task you use.
Choose the MF654Cdw if print, scan, and copy are enough
If fax is unnecessary and two-sided feeder scanning is not a deciding requirement, the MF654Cdw retains the same headline print speed and core multifunction role. Confirm the exact feeder behavior you need against Canon’s documentation before buying rather than inferring it from the shorter “automatic document feeder” label.

Shared specifications and practical placement
Canon lists both as color laser multifunction printers rated up to 22 letter-size pages per minute. That is a manufacturer rating, not an independently measured speed. Canon also specifies approximately 10.3 seconds to first print in black or color on letter paper; actual results can vary by job and conditions.

Availability and review limits
Canon’s U.S.A. shop page marks the MF656Cdw “no longer available.” That is a status for Canon’s shop, not proof that every retailer or the used market is out of stock. Check the seller’s current listing, condition, price, return terms, and cartridge availability before deciding. The MF654Cdw product page exists in Canon’s source set, but its live inventory is not confirmed here. Canon’s MF656Cdw shop page is the manufacturer’s availability reference.
