A connection with the name you specified already exists,” first check for a hidden or obsolete adapter using that name. Inspect hidden devices before removing anything; if you can identify the intended adapter confidently, you can also try renaming it with PowerShell. Registry edits are a risky last resort, not a routine fix.
Why Windows says the adapter name already exists
Windows is rejecting the requested name because it sees that name as already assigned. A hidden or obsolete adapter record is one possible explanation, but it is not established as the cause in every case. The error text itself identifies a name conflict; it does not tell you which adapter is holding the name.

Check for an obsolete hidden adapter

Open Device Manager.
-
Select View > Show hidden devices.

Expand Network adapters and look for a grayed-out adapter that clearly corresponds to an old or conflicting connection.

If you can identify an obsolete device confidently, uninstall that device, then try the rename again. Do not remove an adapter if you are unsure what it is.

Inspect adapters and rename the correct one with PowerShell
Microsoft documents Get-NetAdapter for listing adapters, including hidden ones. Open PowerShell as an administrator and run:

Get-NetAdapter -Name * -IncludeHidden
Use the output to confirm the adapter’s current name before changing it. Microsoft’s Get-NetAdapter documentation describes the hidden-adapter option.

When you have confirmed the intended interface and its current name, substitute those names in this command:

Rename-NetAdapter -Name "OldName" -NewName "NewName" -IncludeHidden
Use the actual current and desired names in place of OldName and NewName. Microsoft states that “The Rename-NetAdapter cmdlet renames a network adapter.” Its Rename-NetAdapter documentation also documents -IncludeHidden. Take care to target the right interface, especially when hidden adapters appear in the list.

Leave registry edits to advanced support
Registry changes should be a last resort. The available troubleshooting guidance recommends backing up before making changes, but does not establish that deleting any particular registry entry is a universally safe or correct fix. Do not delete broad networking keys. If the Device Manager check and a carefully targeted PowerShell rename do not resolve the conflict, ask an administrator or qualified support professional before editing the registry.
